Hunter 1. ALLEN2 HUNTER (JAMES(?)1) was
born May 18, 1786 in SC ? / Near NC/VA border ?, and died March 05, 1869 in ,
Marion, SC. He married REBECCA MORRIS Abt.
1820 in , Marion, SC, daughter of JOSEPH MORRIS. She was born October 03, 1800 in , Horry, SC ?, and died May 11, 1871 in ,
Marion, SC. Both Allen and Rebecca are
buried in the cemetery at Tabernacle Methodist
Church, which they helped found in the early 1800s, in present-day Florence
County, SC. Notes for ALLEN HUNTER: In the 1820 census,
Allen Hunter is listed as "Allin Hunter" , 000010-01000, residing in
Marion District, SC. These numbers
suggest that Allen and Rebecca were married and living in the same household by
that time, with no children. (U.S. Census - Marion District, SC, 1820, p. 59). In 1830, Allen Hunter was living in Marion District, SC. (U.S. Census - Marion District, SC, 1830, p.
23). Allen purchased 282 acres of land Feb. 3, 1837 from James
Crosby for $500. The land was located
"on the Southwest side of Great Peedee River in the Waters of Wilson Mill
Branch" and was "part of a tract of land granted unto John Cooper the first day
of August 1796 for 491 acres." (S.C. Dept. of Archives and History, Columbia,
S.C., Marion Deeds Vol. Q, pp. 392-393). In 1840, Allen Hunter was living in Marion District, SC. (U.S. Census - Marion District, SC, 1840, p.
168). In 1843, Allen Hunter was living in Marion District, SC. (S.C. Census - Marion District, SC, 1843). In 1850, Allen Hunter was living in Marion District, SC. (U.S. Census - Marion District, SC, 1850, p.
32). In 1860, Allen Hunter was living in Marion District, SC. (U.S. Census - Marion District, SC, 1860, p.
55). Allen and Rebecca were apparently instrumental in founding
Tabernacle Methodist Church near their home in Pamplico, Marion District, SC

Methodist Church Cemetery, present-day Florence Co., SC. Location of the cemetery from Florence: Route 51 SE for 11 miles - Turn left at
cross road and proceed 1.5 miles.
Church is on right hand side. Graves are near the road - stones are broken and laying
flat. (See tombstone photos). The tombstone inscription says:

4 1860 - 1880 p. 151 State of South Carolina Marion District I
Allen Hunter of the district and State aforesaid, of sound and disposing mind
memory and understanding do make and ordain the following as my last will and
testament revoking all others heretofore made. Item 1 I give and
bequeath unto my beloved wife one hundred and thirty five (135) acres of land
including the dwelling house and out buildings on T. E. Hunter's line then west
to S. A. Campbell's line running same line south fair enough then aways to Mill
Branch, then up said Branch T. E. Hunter's line again. It is my will and desire at my death for my
beloved wife to have the growing crip of corn fodder cotton peas plantation
tools household and kitchen furniture the mare and mule and two cows and calves
and three head of dry cattle. Item 2 I give and
bequeath unto my beloved daughter Elizabeth Sweet at the death of my beloved
wife the one hundred and thirty five acres of land I give her in item first of
this my last will and testament also the mare and mule and one half of all
property left in the plantation at the death of my wife. I also give her at my death one cow and calf
two heiffers and the increase also one sow and nine pigs and the increase and
also one bed and furniture. Item 3 I give and
bequeath unto my beloved granddaughter Elizabeth R. Sweet one bed and furniture
two cows and calves and their increase and at the death of my daughter
Elizabeth Sweet it is my will and desire that the said Elizabeth R. Sweet my
granddaughter have the one hundred and thirty five acres of land I bequeath to
her mother in item 2 of this my last will and testament and also all species of
property left on the place at the death of her mother. Item 4 I give and
bequeath unto my beloved son Thomas E. Hunter at the death of my wife one bed
and furniture two cows and calves and three head dry cattle and one half of all
the property on the plantation (horse carts excepted) the other half horse
carts to my daughter Elizabeth Sweet share and share alike. Item 5 I give and
bequeath unto my beloved son William Hunter one dollar which I consider with
what I have given him makes his full share. Item 6 I give and
bequeath unto my beloved grandchildren namely Mary Rebecca, Stephen Allen,
James and William Hunter all the balance of my lands suposed (sic) to be two
hundred acres to be sold by my executor when ever he thinks propper (sic)
either privately or at public outcry and the amount it brings to be applied by
my Executor to the education of the above grand children. Item 7 I hereby
nominate constitut (sic) and appoint my son Thomas E. Hunter my executor to
this my last will and testament. In
witness whereof I have at or near the top of the fourth page of this my last
will and testament the hole (sic) whereof is contained herein have set my hand
and seal this eight (sic) day of January in the ------ of our Lord one thousand
eight hundred and sixty nine and in the ninety third year of independence of
the United States of America. Signed sealed delivered and published by Allen Hunter as and
for his last will and testament in the presence of us who at his request and in
his presence have subscribed our names as witness there to. S.A.

of Probate Personally appeared before J.W. Campbell one of the
subscribing witness (sic) to the foregoing instrument of writing who made oath
on the Holy Evangilists (sic) of Almighty God that he saw Allen Hunter sign
seal publish pronounce and disclose the same to be his last will and testament:
that he was then of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding to the
best of deponent's knowledge and believe (sic) and deponent together with S.A
Campbell Amanda V. Hyman signed their names hereto as witness at his request in
his presence and in the presence of each other; at the same time qualified
Thomas E. Hunter Executor therein named. J.
W. Campbell Given under my hand the eight (sic) day of December in the
year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy and in the ninety fifth year of American Independence. John Wilcox (his seal) Judge
of Probate M.C. South Carolina Marion County I do
solmly (sic) swear that this writing contains the last true will of the within
named Allen Hunter so far as I know or believe and that I well and truely
administer the same by paying first the debts and then the legacees (sic)
contained in said will as far as his goods and chattels will there extend and
the law charge me and that I will make a true and perfect inventory of all such
goods and chattels so help me God. Sworn to before me this eighth day of December A.D. 1870
