The Hunters of our family line have been traced back to Allen Hunter (1786 - 1869) in Marion District (now Florence County), SC.  Allen’s parents and birthplace are unknown, and have been the subjects of a great deal of research and speculation.  Some speculate that his father was William Thomas Hunter, from the names of two of Allen’s sons.  My own speculation is that his father was James, based on the naming pattern of J.M. Hunter’s children and the existence of a James Hunter who lived in the Peedee region of South Carolina with a child the right age for Allen, according to the 1790 census.

7.  JAMES THOMAS4 HUNTER (JOSEPH MORRIS3, ALLEN2, JAMES(?)1) was born June 05, 1858 in Marion, Marion, SC, and died June 07, 1900.  He married MARY COSTALO JONES January 23, 1889.  She was born November 25, 1865, and died March 14, 1944.

Notes for JAMES THOMAS HUNTER:

Based on the naming pattern of his siblings, I'm guessing that James was named after his paternal grandfather Allen Hunter's father.

Siblings #1 and #2 were named after the grandparents. Brother Joseph was named for his paternal grandmother Rebecca's father.  It seems reasonable that a son would be named for the paternal grandfather's father.

From THE PEE DEE ADVOCATE, Marlboro County, SC newspaper, June 14, 1900 issue:

"J. T. HUNTER died last Thursday night. He was a native of Marion Co., and married Miss Costa JONES of Marion. She and 6 children survive him. Buried at Holy Rood Cemetery at Blenheim."

James' remains were moved from Blenheim, SC, to Rose Hill Cem., Marion Co., about 1959,

into the "Hunter family plot," according to a letter from Audrey Hunter (Mrs. Jones Thomas Hunter, Jr.)

dated March 6, 1969.

From THE PEE DEE ADVOCATE, Marlboro County, SC newspaper, March 1, 1900 issue:

"Mr. Edgar HUNTER married Miss Jeanie RICHARDS on Feb. 14 in Blenheim. Rev. J. G. RICHARDS – father of the bride, and Rev. Chas. RICHARDS – brother of the bride."  Is Edgar one of James' six children??

Child of JAMES HUNTER and MARY JONES is:

13.              i.    JONES THOMAS5 HUNTER, SR., b. Abt. 1896.
