Cherokee Run and Ira E Britten
At https://sites.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/maps/itmap.htm are links to maps and some other resources which may be helpful in the research on Ira and the Cherokee Run. The map at this location shows points of importance in Oklahoma in the Cherokee Run.
Notice where Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma are in relation to each other. In searching out the Pre-Registration offices for people to be on the Cherokee Run of 16 Sept 1893, there were offices in Kiowa, Cameron, Caldwell, Hunnewell and Arkansas City on the Kansas side, in Kansas. . On the Oklahoma side, there were offices in Kiowa, Cameron, Caldwell, Hunnewell and Arkansas City on the Kansas side. On the Oklahoma side, the offices were in Goodwin, Hennessy, Orlando and Stillwater Oklahoma. (This information is obtain through http://arkcity.org/index.asp?NID=378 . The offices on the Kansas side are in Kansas, apparently. It kind of depended upon which side of Oklahoma the person was living in, as to which office they may have used to pre-register.
Our Ira E Britton was living in Stone County Missouri, or so we believe, just prior to being on the Cherokee Run. Looking at the map, I'd say he could have either used the Kansas side offices of pre-registraton offices, or Oklahoma offices. This must still be investigated, as to which office he would have used. Where does Stone county Missouri sit in relation to Oklahoma and Kansas?
Once Ira found his claim, he would have had to put a flag on his property, then go to one of the offices at Perry, Alva, Enid or Woodward Oklahoma. So, the next step in our research on Ira is to find out which office he went to. Then in order to obtain his deed, he would have had to stay on his property at least 6 months, then make improvements. If all the conditions were made, then he
would have obtained his deed to the property. (Information from
http://arkcity.org/index.asp?NID=378 ) Ok, so did he actually obain land in the Cherokee Run? We have to investigate this yet.
As the story goes from Ira's descendant, he did stay in Oklahoma for a little while. Then he went to Liberal or perhaps Burdett Kansas. Did he leave Kansas, or pass away there? I don't know yet. Anyway, in looking at the map, we see that Kansas is just north of Okahoma. I will look at a map of Oklahoma in relation to Burdett and Liberal Kansas.
Then the story goes that Ira or his descendants moved to Baca county, Colorado. As family story goes, they homesteaded near Springfield Colorado. We also have record that there was a Dr Hamilton, who was (or his wife was) supposedly a descendant of Ira. I, with help from Baca County lookup volunteers, has found a man whom she suspects is Dr Hamilton dying in Baca County with his wife Clara. I suspect that this doctor may have been practicing medicine in baca county. Perhaps in Las Animas County as instead, but likely Baca...So the travels of Ira and or his descendants moves to Colorado. Now, we need to see how Liberal and Burdett Kansas sit in relation to Baca county Colorado.
There is also record in the family that perhaps descendants were also in New Mexico. Another descendant lived in Las Vegas Nevada. Yet another lived in Las Angeles California.
Currently I am attempting to trace Ira's possible descendants in Baca County Colorado, and attempt to find some record of Ira somewhere in the places listed above. To date, I've done some email inquiry, based upon some websites found on the Cherokee Run and also Baca County Colorado. There is a place where I can attempt to locate Ira's Pre-Registration office, as well as hopefully obtain his land deed from the Cherokee Run. Then there is a lady in Baca County Colorado who is writing several books with source information. She says that there are several Brittons with various spellings listed in Baca County early history. ... Please stay tuned ...
