Groves Family

A Study of The Groves Family
from Grant Co, Kentucky

Compiled by Sandra Burbridge

The FirstGeneration

Samuel Groves of Prince William Co. Virginia was the father of John E. Groves. He is first found in the Grant Co., Kentucky vital statistics in the obituary of John E. Groves:

John E. Groves, 65 year old white male born in Prince William County, Virginia. Married farmer residing in Grant County died February 2, 1852 of scarlatina. Father: Samuel, mother; Mary.
Research of Prince William County Virginia by the Prince William Genealogical Society provided the following:
On the 1785 tax list, there is a William and Samuel Groves in Stafford County. (Prince William was formed from Stafford County.) William is charged tax on five white males, 1 dwelling and 1 other building.

Samuel is charged tax for 8 white males, 1 dwelling and 1 other building. In 1787 the only Samuel Groves listed in Virginia is also living in Stafford County with no male thithables over 16 and has 2 horses and 6 cattle. In less than two years, 8 white males over the age of 16 have left Samuels home. According to John's obituary, he was not born until 1785 and would not have been included in these numbers.

Samuel again appears in Stafford County in 1790 but no details are given. In 1792 Samuel Groves appears in court records dated March 12, 1792 in a Stafford County Case of Aaron Botts and Elizabeth Tolson vs. John Starke and Samuel Groves. (March Court 1792. pg 231)

The Personal Property Tax List for Prince William County; There are two William Groves and one Samuel Groves listed in 1795. Then Samuel stops appearing. In 1799 Mrs. Mary Groves appears on the tax list being charged for one horse/mule living around Chappawamsic Neck. That year also has a George and two William Groves listed. In 1800 there are the following Groves: William, Elenor, Mary and George. In 1802 there are only Sarah and Elenor listed.

There conclusion: From the above information, we know Samuel to be in Stafford County in 1785, 1787, 1790, 1792 and in Prince William County in 1795.

This is somewhat confusing as John E. Groves was born in Prince William County in 1785 while Samuel was in Stafford County, adjacent to Prince William Co. It is however, generally agreed that information on a death certificate is the least reliable as the principal is not providing his own information. Is it possible, perhaps likely that John was born in Stafford County and was raised in Prince William County, leaving Stafford as a small child.

It is also assumed that Samuel had several other sons, or brothers who were living with him in 1787 and that Samuel probably died before 1799 leaving Mary as a widow. Further research is required in Virginia.

The Prince William Genealogical Society also searched for a military record for Samuel Groves and concluded the following:

We did not locate Samuel Groves in the index of Revolutionary War Soliders however, he was mentioned in Virginia Revolutionary Pension Applications by Dorman. Under the the Martin Deer's application: "Capt. James Smith raised the company and Samuel Groves was Lieutenant and Charles Gooding wa ensign......
Under John Gibsons's application: : "The company was in command of Capt. James Smith, Lt Samuel Groves and Ens. Godsen. He met his company at Barnette's Ford in Culpeper County.."
It is possible that Samuel served but did not live long enough to apply for a pension. There was definitely a Samuel Groves who served verified by two men's testimony.

Notes for MILDRED JANE TUGGLE:
Mildred appears to have married at age 13. Though she is sometimes listed as 10 years older, she would have been in her 50's when last children were born.

Though her mother is listed as Elizabeth Carter and her father as John Tuttle on her death certificate in 1914, this appears to be incorrect.
Clark County marriages states she is the daughter of Nancy Potts, daughter of John Adams, and her guardian is James Bybee. Father, deceased, is John Tuggle.

There is a listing for a Jane L? Groves in Grant County, 65 yrs in 1900. Mag district Sheet 2 Line 15. Listed with a granddaughter, Stella M. Groves, 12 yrs old, born Oct 1887. Do not know whose daughter she is. This could be our Mildred Jane as she was listed as Jane Groves in obit and lived for several years (as late as 1880) in Grant County. However, Samuel was still alive in 1895 as witness to daughter's marriage.

Lived with her daughter Mary in Clark County at the time of death. She is a widow. She is buried on Dykes Farm in Clark County.

iii. DANIEL TUCKER GROVES, b. February 08, 1852, Estill County, Kentucky23; d. December 28, 1913, Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois24; m. PERLINA GROVES, December 10, 1874, Corinth, Grant County, Kentucky25.

Notes for DANIEL TUCKER GROVES:
Daniel Groves often went by Tucker or D.T. Groves. Though reported to be born in Ford, Clark County, Ky. He states on Marriage certificate to Perlina that he was born in Estill County, KY. His mother was born in Estill County and lived in Clark County. The Testimony of Mary Groves' descendants supports their residence in the Estill/Clark County area.

He is listed in the 1870 Owen County KY Census as a farm laborer. Listed on page 21 of the New Columbus District.

In 1880 Grant County, KY Census E.D. 91 page 6 line15 and the Kentucky Soundex, he is listed as D.T. Groves with his wife Perlina and three children. Robert-Lee (4 yrs) William (2yrs) and Annie (2 mo.) See notes under Perlina and Marriage.

He reportedly moved to Springfield, Illinois in 1897.
In 1900 he is listed in the Sangamon County, Illinois Soundex and Census
E.D. 118 pg. 8 line 32, New Berlin Township as a farm laborer with the family of John Erickson. He is reported to be a widow. His children are not mentioned.

According to his granddaughter, Cora, Daniel lived with his son Julius in Springfield, Ill.

Williams's mother is reported to be Martha Dunn on his death certificate. This is not correct. It is possible that Daniel was married more than once. 2nd wife may have been Martha Dunn. Julius mother reportedly died when he was born or very young. Julius was apparently raised in a foster home of a family by the name of Shear (or Spear). This could be Lucy and Henry Spear from Grant County. Lucy was the widow of William Noah Groves who was the sister of Julius mother. He died in 1880.

Daniel died in 1913 in a hunting accident .He was shot in the back by John Anderson at the home of Bob Sandige. A coroner's inquest in Sangamon found Mr. Anderson blameless. Sangamon County Coroner's Office. Springfield Illinois Newspaper.

No mention of his wife or other children (Robert-Lee and Annie) They are not listed as survivors. His mother is listed as D. Grove from Ford Kentucky. This is incorrect his mothers name was Mildred and his father was Samuel.

Notes for PERLINA GROVES:
As per her marriage bond, Perlina is the daughter of George Groves brother of Samuel Groves. She is sometimes referred to as Perlina or Pulina.
He was married to Rebecca McLain at the time of her birth, who is assumed to be her mother.
She was born in 1852 after the 1850 census and Rebecca had died or divorced by 1860 census.
Perlina is not listed with her father, George Groves and his new wife, Mahala Wolf in 1860.
She is under 10 years old at the time of her mother's death but no guardian has been found.

Perlina is listed in 1880 Grant County Census with husband D.T. Groves and children Robert Lee b. 1876, William 1878 and Annie 1880.

The date of death for Perlina Groves is undetermined. In her granddaughter Edna s bible, it is stated that he died when Julius was a baby. Julius her last child was born in 1889.

No record has been found for either Annie, Perlina's only daughter or Robert Lee her first born.

Notes for EDWARD G. GROVES:
Edward is a mystery as he is only listed in Daniel obituary in the Illinois State Journal 12/29/1913 as a surviving brother living in Springfield, Illinois.
Also listed as surviving son in obituary for Mildred Jane Groves in 1914.

Edward is found in the 1900 Grant County, KY Census though he is not found in 1880 census with family; he appears to have been born in 1869. Census lists Edith as his wife, also living with Nance Cavanaugh; relationship is "ML" possibly mother in law and William House 18 yr., listed as "BO" would not be brother if this were the correct Edward. Brother in law?

xi. NANCY ANN GROVES was born November 6, 1854. As her existence was only recently rediscovered, I have no information on Nancy Groves.

Mahala Groves of Harrison Co, KY applied for a widows pension No. 601674 on June 30, 1898. She was 59 years old. She states "that she has no income all the property she has at present or has owned since July 7th, 1894 is a little household furniture which would not exceed in value more than $20.00. That she lives in a room of a house belonging to her son John Groves who has a family and works by days. Work for his support and her only means of support is her youngest child Jepetha who works by days. She further states that she is unable to work on account of her weak physical condition and support is a very meager one." She states that they have been separated for 12 years but not divorced.

Nancy Groves, 26 yrs old, who married George Groves in 1890 and also applies for a widow's pension. It is not certain whether he was ever divorced from Mahala Groves. He was however separated for 12 years and married Nancy Smalley before his death.
Williamstown Courier Genealogical Index Vol I Par A Groves, Geo W. married 7-24-1890 age 70 to Nancy Smalley age 26, liscense issued 21 July, 1890

Found in 1880 Grant Census w/Ben Roberson listed as divorced.
Mahala listed in 1880 Harrison County w/6 children as widow.

PETTY McCLAIN BENJAMIN ROBERSON 04-15 1834 BATH KENT 1634
This appears to be the same Roberson George was listed with in the 1880 census. Priscilla, eldest daughter of George Groves, was listed with the said Roberson in the 1860 census. What is relationship to Rebecca? George and Rebecca Groves sold land to Ben Roberson from her estate.

George is not present at the marriage of Perlina Groves and Daniel Tucker Groves but sends permission stating that Daniel has "permission to marry miy daughter".

George is buried in Nelson Family Cemetery in Corinth with his son William Groves. William's children and his son's wife, Lucy Jane Nelson, and several members of her family are also buried here. There are no dates are on George's tombstone.

Notes for WILLAIM NOAH GROVES:

William Noah Groves went by the name of Noah. He died in 1880 leaving three children. His wife, Lucy Groves, then married Henry Spears. This is apparently the family that raised Julius Caesar Groves after the death of his mother. Noah Groves, Nancy Groves and Henry Spears are buried in the Nelson family cemetery along with his father, George Groves and the Dunn family. (Martha Dunn is listed erroneously on William Groves' death certificate as his mother).

William Groves lived on a farm next door to Nelson's.

Notes for LUCY JANE NELSON:
In Covington KY 1940

Lucy Groves marries Henry Spears after the death of William Noah Groves in 1880. If George is the father of Perlina, she is William Noah Groves' sister and Lucy's sister-in-law.
