Thomas Wiley Riddle

15 January 1915 Obit for his son, Richard Nathaniel Riddle states that "his father, Thomas Riddle, who lived to be 105, was a drummer boy under General Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans."

Descendants of Thomas Wiley Riddle
Great Grandfather of Ethel Price Stratman

Much of the research for this Riddle family was done by Bobby Rakestraw, Vic and Peggy Newton. Thank you for generously sharing your hard work.

Generation No. 1

THOMAS WILEY3 RIDDLE was born 1803 in Virginia. He married(1) REBECCA. We have no information on Rebecca. He married(2) MORGANA (MARYANNA). She was born 1805 in North Carolina.

Notes for THOMAS WILEY RIDDLE: Thomas Wiley Riddle, listed on Martha's death certificate as "Wiley Ridle". He has been very difficult to locate but the following fits all the criteria, age, location and the known children.

1850 Census Williamson County, Illinois

Martha Riddle, the daughter of Thomas Riddle and the grandmother of Ethel Price Stratman, was an heir of James Rakestraw of Webster County, Kentucy who died in 1909. Researhers of the Rakestraw family tell the following story:
John and James Rakestraw arrived in Webster County area of Kentucky when it was still apart of Hopkins County. It is recorded that John was born in 1822 in Tennessee and James M. was born in 1824 also in Tennessee. They arrived in the area with their mother and father probably in the late 1820s. The story is their father returned to "North Carolina" for additional supplies and the family stayed with Thomas Wiley Riddle. Upon return, Mrs. Maryann Rakestraw (maiden name unknown) refused to leave and decided to stay with Mr. Riddle. The identity of Mr. Rakestraw is also undetermined.
(Story provided by Bobby Rakestraw.)

This story has been told for generations in the Rakestraw family and appears to be supported by the available data though several questions are unanswered.

The Rakestraw sons, James and John both recieved several land grants in the Webster County area while the first definite record of Thomas Riddle and his new wife, Maryanna (or Morgana) is in the 1850 Williamson County, Illinois census.

The Rakestraw boys apparently remained close to their mother. James even marrys the Riddle's next door neighbor in Williamson County Illinois, Mary Jane Pate. John's oldest daughter is found married and living in Franklin Co., Ill. and one of her sisters is living with her in 1870. Nancy Riddle, their half sister, is living with James Riddle and his wife in the 1850 census. (There is some confusion here as she is also listed in 1850 with her family in Illinois.) James Rakestraw was the best man at Henry's wedding, his half brother.

Were James and John raised by Thomas Riddle after their mother left Mr. Rakestraw or did they stay with their father who has not been located?

There is also every indication that Thomas Wiley Riddle was also married before to Rebecca (maiden name unknown). The following births have been found in Illinois records:

Thomas Riddle b. abt 1831, Franklin Co., Ill.
parents- Thomas & Rebecca

William Riddle b. abt 1827, Franklin Co., Ill.
parents- Thomas & Rebecca

John Riddle b. 1825, Franklin Co., Ill.
parents- Thomas & Rebecca

Nathaniel Riddle b. abt 1829- Franklin Co., Ill.
parents- Thomas & Rebecca

Several of the children of Maryanna and Thomas were reportedly born in Giles Co., Tennessee. Perhaps the original farm of Thomas Riddle was in Tennessee and not Kentucky though I have not been able to locate him their.

Henry, Jane, Martha and Amanda are all half sisters and brothers of James and John Rakestraw as they and their descendants shared in his estate after his death in 1909. Their other children; Thomas, George, Mary and Caroline are not mentioned.

Richard Nathaniel RIDDLE aged 100 years and 6 months, died at the home of his son in Creal Springs last Saturday. He had been feeling bad for several days and on the day before his death walked up to the business section unaccompanied. He is living on Cherokee Indian lands. https://sites.rootsweb.com/~tngiles/goodspd/settlers.htm More research is required.

Benton Evening Newspaper 31 March 1933:
Mrs Martha Fletcher 92, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs Dave Price, in Benton, Illinois. Her body will be returned to Paducah, Kentucky for burial.

Martha's daughter Mary refers to her mother's home as Paducah KY in McCracken Co., Kentucky. She is buried there in Oak Lawn Cemetery. The indenture/deed at the time of James Rakestraw's death indicaties she is a resident of Webster Co, Kentucky. The connection to Paducah in McCracken County has never been determined for the Rakestraws or Martha Riddle. Could her husband, James Fletcher, have been from there? She is buried in the Smith Family Plat. Do not know who the Smith family is.

Notes for JAMES A.FLETCHER:
