The first schooling of San Quentin children began in 1867.

The first San Quentin schoolhouse, date unknown, was in the Valley section of the reservation, previously known as the Gulch, and was located below the fresh and salt water reservoirs. When the schoolhouse was built it was partially paid for by contributions from the the residents of the village.
