Brownie The Dog

Brownie The Dog

Return to Escapes

One man hunt I recall took William Duffy, a guard, out to the nearby woods with a rifle. It was just getting dusk and he had taken his son's dog, Brownie, with him. The grass was dry and slippery, and William had to climb a couple of barbed wire fences, so he unloaded his gun.

Soon Brownie started to growl and go toward the bushes. Duffy called, "Come out, I've got you covered. "Soon a man came out of the bushes with his hands up. Duffy told him to start marching up the road toward the prison. Then he followed him, but said, "Don't be startled. I am going to fire a shot to call all the other guards in. He then realized that his gun was empty. He hastily slipped some shells into the gun as inconspicuously as possible, and fired a shot. He realized that he would be no match for this husky prisoner if the man had tried to overpower him but, fortunately, it all turned out in his favor and he brought the man back to the prison. Chalk up a star for Brownie.
