The
entire prison complex had a sewer system that drained into the bay
as raw sewage. One time, two prisoners, knowing that the drain pipe
at low tide was exposed above the water of the bay, entered a man
hole and decided to crawl down the pipe line and escape. After some
strenuous crawling they came to the end of the pipe. When they
reached the end they found that a heavy grill had been placed over
the end of the pipe.
Then
they began the long tedious journey back to the manhole about a
quarter of a mile away. Crawling backwards, they inched themselves
along, and hours later, eventually reached the man hole. They climbed
back into the yard, slimy and stinking, and more dead than alive, but Oh
How Good That Prison Yard Looked.
