Manuel

Manuel

Return to Inmates

We knew Manuel as an aged Mexican who worked in the garden where Clinton and Gladys lived on the prison reservation. Manuel had been convicted of the murder of his wife, who had been unfaithful to him. Captain Carpenter, Gladys Duffy's father, learned of the case and he succeeded in having Manuel's sentence changed from the death penalty to life imprisonment. Manuel was forever grateful to Captain Carpenter, and adored him. He served many years as a Gardner for the family. When Clinton became the warden he brought Manuel to the Warden's mansion and fixed a little room for him in the basement. Manuel was always very fond of our children and he was a kind and appreciative person.

Eventually Manuel reached the time when he became eligible for parole. He decided that he would not apply for his parole. Freedom meant nothing to him. San Quentin was his home, and the Duffy's were his people, and he would never be happy on the outside. So he lived the remainder of his life at San Quentin.
