Return
to Inmates
Jimmie
Murphy was a friendly Irishman. He used to perform in the prison
shows. He had a good tenor voice and his wit made him very popular.
We got to know Murph. He was a friendly guy. One
day, while in San Francisco, I went into a restaurant near the
waterfront for lunch. My waiter was Jimmie Murphy, who had been
released from prison. He told me that his boss did not know that he
was an Ex-Con. Had he known this, Murph would
not likely have gotten the job.
In
the restaurant I had a nice lunch and as I took my tab up to the
cashier to pay for it, I noticed to my surprise that it was for
fifteen cents. I was at a loss what to do. If I disputed the tab it
might cost Murphy his Job. So I paid it and started to leave. On my
way out I passed Murphy and he noticed the questioning look that I
gave him. He said, "Bill, you know you only had coffee and
-- didn't you?"
