BLACK TORRINGTON.

The lambing season just beginning will be an anxious one for owners of sheep. The extremely wet time we have had has, it is feared, affected the health of the ewes, and, if this proves correct, the growth of lambs will be seriously retarded.

The local Committee for Technical Education has arranged for a course of instruction in ploughing. Those desirous of joining the class are asked to give their names to any member of the Committee by the end of next week. If there are not a satisfactory number the course will be abandoned.

A case of anthrax was reported at Coham last week, and caused some anxiety lest it should spread. Every precaution was taken, and, fortunately, no further cases have broken out. The pig, a valuable one, which died from the disease, was burnt, by order of the authorities.

The best weekly scores of the Rifle Club were:- J JURY, 34; G BEAL, 35; A BORN, 34; F HARRIS, 35; F T EASTWICKE, 33; J B BORN, 35; R S BORN, 34; B CLASS; C CHAPMAN, 34; W ISAAC, 34; F JURY, 35; H CHAPMAN, 34. The winners of the January monthly prizes, given by Mr C J HEALD, were:- J JURY, 105; B CLASS, J CHAPMAN, 105. Other scores were:- G BEAL, 104; A J BORN, 101; F HARRIS, 105; F T EASTWICKE, 104; J B BORN, 103; R S BORN, 103.

The social evening arranged by the Choral Society in aid of the Reading-room funds was one of the most successful ever held in the village. There was an attendance of about 90. The musical portion was capitally rendered as follows:- Pianoforte duets, Miss B. KELLY and Miss Phyllis BORN, Miss B. KELLY and Mr. F. T. EASTWICKE; songs, Miss BRIGHT, Nurse POPE, the Rev. T. BUNCOMBE, Messrs. T. ALCOCK, W. NEWCOMBE, and W. CHAPMAN. Dancing was enjoyed to music provided by Mrs. COHAM-FLEMING, Misses B. KELLY and F. BROAD (pianoforte), and Mr. F. NEWCOMBE (accordion). Whist and draughts were also indulged in. Refreshments were kindly dispensed by Miss P. PAIGE, Miss E. BRIGHT, Miss HORTON, and Miss BAULKWILL. The Rector heartily thanked Mrs. COHAM-FLEMING for giving part of the provisions, and all who had helped to make the event such a great success.

The RISDON family of Hayne have always been esteemed for their kind and consistent support of the Church and any other good institutions in the parish. Mr. James RISDON, who is the Rector's churchwarden, had a pleasant surprise on Monday – his birthday. To celebrate the occasion, his sister, Miss E. RISDON, invited the church choir and organist to tea and a musical evening. After partaking of a sumptuous tea, various items of vocal and instrumental music were enjoyed, the principal contributors being Miss KELLY, Miss B. KELLY, and Mr. F. T. EASTWICKE. Games were also indulged in. Before leaving, the senior member of the choir thanked Miss RISDON for the very enjoyable time she had given them. He referred to the respect and esteem in which the family was held in the parish and neighbourhood. On behalf of the choir, he wished Mr. RISDON many happy returns of the day, and trusted that both he and Miss RISDON would be spared for many years to continue their interest in the church and choir. The boys gave hearty cheers for Mr. and Miss RISDON, and the former, in acknowledging, said he knew nothing of the arrangement until the same day, but both he and his sister were delighted to have the choir with them, and both had enjoyed the company of their guests.
