BLACK TORRINGTON.

The Football Club concluded the season by a match with Hatherleigh, in a field lent by Mr J. JURY. The visitors played a good game, and deserved their win of five to one.

Mr. BRIGHT, his Majesty's Inspector of Schools, has paid a lengthy visit to the National School. He examined the various classes, and appeared to be satisfied with the results.

General regret was expressed in the neighbourhood at the death of Miss Emily RISDON, which occurred, after a long illness, at Hayne. Apart from being a member of an old and honoured family, Miss RISDON was of a genial and kindly disposition, and her numerous acts of kindness, in an unostentatious manner, made her generally esteemed. The funeral takes place in the(?) parish churchyard to-day.

The rent audit of the Coham Estate has been held at the Union Hotel. There was a large attendance of tenantry, the Estate having, of late, been considerably enlarged by Mr. B. COHAM-FLEMING, who has purchased various farms in the district. The tenantry sat down to a capital dinner, excellently served by Mr. and Mrs. BROAD. Mr. B. COHAM-FLEMING presided, and the usual toasts were honoured.

The Sports Committee has met, under the chairmanship of Mr. H. H. EARLE, to make preliminary arrangements. A satisfactory statement of accounts was presented. It was resolved to hold the next sports on June 25th, and to largely increase the prize-money. The President for the year is Major GOODWIN. General Sir John OWEN and Mr. A. Scott BROWNE have consented to be added to the list of vice-presidents. Mr. W. WIVELL has been added to the Committee.

A fancy dress dance, arranged by Mrs. COHAM-FLEMING, has been held in the National School, which was nicely decorated. About 60 attended. In the refreshment department Mrs. COHAM-FLEMING had the assistance of Mrs. W. WIVELL and Mrs. BAKER. The music was provided by Mr. J. ELLIOT (Merton), and in an interval there were selections on a gramophone, lent by Mr. COHAM-FLEMING. The proceeds were for providing a new cycle for the district nurse.

Mayor GOODWIN (president) presided at the half-yearly meeting of the Rifle Club. The Secretary reported a small balance in hand. Prizes during the winter had been won by Messrs. J. JURY, F. JURY, and F. HARRIS. The latter also won the aggregate prize for the five months' shooting in the A Class, while the prize given for recruits was won by J. KNIGHT. It was resolved to commence the summer practice at once, and the competitions the first week in June. Prizes have been promised by the President, Dr. and Mrs. CANDLER(?), Mr. C. J. HEALD, and Mr. F. T. EASTWICK. It is hoped that other supporters, with their usual generosity, will also contribute to the list, as prizes are a decided stimulus to practice.
