HARTLAND.

The Guild opening social was well attended. Miss Mary PILLMAN organised the games, etc.

The Great Refusal” was the subject of an address by the Rev. ROBERTS at the Guild. Mrs. HALLIDAY was organist. Miss Kathleen COLWILL sang a solo, and Mr. Arthur THORNE read the lesson.

Mr. William THORN, 77, died in Bideford Hospital after five weeks' illness. Born here December 31st, 1863, second son of Wm. and Ann THORN, he learnt the mason's craft from S. CANN. At our parish church on April 19th, 1888, he married Martha DAYMAN, daughter of the last Stoke blacksmith, who survives him. Soon after, they moved to the Rhondda Valley, where he plied his trade for forty-six years, and then retired to North Devon, settling at Morwenna House, 104, West-street. Besides the widow, he leaves two sons and a daughter. The Rev. G. E. MULLARD officiated at the funeral. Miss Bertha PILLMAN was organist. Hymns were “Jesu, Lover” and “Lead, Kindly Light.” Bearers were nephews and grand-nephews – Messrs. Lewis, Fred, William, Thomas, and Denzil THORNE, Stanley and Fred DAYMAN. Mourners were deceased's wife and daughter, both sons, grandson, brother, brother-in-law, nephews, and nieces.
