BRAUNTON

A well-attended whist drive was held at the ex-Servicemen's Club on Monday. Winners were:- Ladies – 1, Mrs. F. C. LEE; 2, Mrs. A. BROWN; 3, Mrs. LANGLEY and Mrs. THETFORD (tie); gentlemen – 1, Miss D. GOULD (as gentleman); 2, E. KERSWELL; 3, E. LANGLEY.

BUSINESS TRANSFER. - Mr. S. A. SMITH, Stationer and Newsagent, of Caen-street, Braunton, begs to announce that his business is now transferred to MR. GEORGE CHUGG, and solicits the kind support of his many customers for the new proprietor, who will give them every courtesy and service.

Mrs. HEARSON presided over a good attendance at last week's meeting of Braunton Congregational Women's Guild. The speaker was Mrs. Evan WOOD, of Ilfracombe, who spoke on the work of the L.M.S. in Africa. A musical programme, arranged by Mrs. Eccott SCOYNE, consisted of a piano solo by Miss Mary LUSCOMBE, a recitation by Mrs. HEARSON, a duet by Mesdames SCOYNE and TRENGOVE, and a solo by Master David SLEE.

Mrs. Mary Jane BRAUND, wife of Mr. Wm. BRAUND, who is the well-known sail-maker of Braunton, passed away on Tuesday last at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. G. WEST, at Exeter-road, aged 81 years. Mr. and Mrs. BRAUND lost one son (William) in the Great War. The remaining children are Messrs. Thomas, Richard, and Albert BRAUND, Mrs. M. KIVELL, Mrs. M. INCLEDON, and Mrs. E. M. WEST.

J.I.L. - A successful jolly evening, organised by the Braunton Imps, was held on Tuesday, February 4th, at the Ex-Servicemen's Hall. The brace of pheasants, which was given by the Chairman, Sir William WILLIAMS, was won by Mr. S. TUCKER, and presented by Mr. P. M. WILLIAMS

(Divisional Chairman). Mr. J. PAUL and Miss DENNIS, Mr. C. NIKE and partner, Miss BROWN and partner were the winners of the game and dance competition. Mr. A. W. BOND, the chief agent, spoke. Mr. A. LEY proposed, and Mr. S. TUCKER seconded, a vote of thanks to Mr. WILLIAMS and Mr. BOND.

At Ye St. Brannock's Lodge R.A.O.B. there was again a gratifying attendance on Friday. Bro. L. P. THETFORD presided. The Auditor's report, presented by Bro. S. LEY, disclosed that the Lodge was in a very sound position financially. Hearty thanks to the Auditors, Secretary and Treasurer were expressed. Bro. T. BRAUND, K.O.M., gave a satisfactory sick report, and Bro. E. Tattersall WILLIAMS, K.O.M., reported further progress in arrangements for the children's party. A feature of the evening's entertainment was a clever parody on “Clementine,” written and sung by Bro. F. REED. The verses dealt with the doings of various brethren of the Lodge, and caused great amusements. Bro. REED was rewarded with hearty applause. Others rendering harmony were Bros. R. TAYLOR, J. DENDLE, C. MINS., K. KERSWELL, C.P., and others. The monthly election of officers resulted as follows:- W.P., Bro. R. BRAUND, K.O.M.; A.B., Bro. L. P. THETFORD, K.O.M.; C.M., Bro. S. HARDING; C.Ty., Bro. R. RIDGE; C.Ch., Bro. W. PILE; C.Co., Bro. F. LEWORTHY, C.P.,; C.Reg., Bro. W. PASSMORE; C.Mins., Bro. J. DENDLE; C.Sec., Bro. P. R. JOHNSON, C.P.; C.Tr., Pro. S. J. LAMPREY, K.O.M.; C.W., Bro. R. A. ATKINS, K.O.M. - Bro. L. P. THETFORD, K.O.M., reported that a party of seven members had visited Ye Barum Lodge on the previous Wednesday, and had spent a most enjoyable evening.
