HOLSWORTHY.

A sad affair transpired at Chilsworthy near Holsworthy last Friday, when two married men Samuel DAVIES, and Walter VANSTONE, who were working for Mr. Richard JONES, fell out about some trifle and it appears in his anger DAVIES went to strike VANSTONE with a prong, and unfortunately ran the prong into VANSTONE's head. His head bled very much as he was being taken to Dr. ASHE's surgery; under Dr ASHE's treatment there does not now appear to be any serious results.

Last Friday I received from Pyworthy a fine sample of dumpling apples one weighed full 16 ounces. On Saturday, passing a farm in Bridgerule parish, for at least 52 years past to my own knowledge noted for abundance of honey, the farme <sic> commented on reports in the “Western Times” on mangolds 24 inches round. The farmer said that he could produce mangolds 26 inches round, and that Squire P----, of Bude seeing his fine mangolds last Wednesday took two or three of them as a sample to exhibit in Holsworthy market. The same farmer also groves splendid potatoes.

Mr. FRY, who has been the registrar of births, marriages and deaths, from the commencement of the new law in 1837, now 47 years ago, has recently resigned the registration of marriages, and in that capacity Mr. William HENRY is appointed. Mr. FRY is registrar of births and deaths as usual. During the long term in which Mr. FRY has been registrar there have been no less than three superintendent registrars – first, the late Mr. Charles KINGDON, solicitor; second, the late Mr. Richard COCK, solicitor; third, the present superintendent registrar, Mr. George BRAUNN, <sic> who after the death of Mr. COCK was appointed in 1849. Mr. BRAUND was the superintendent registrar who was qualified to grant marriage licences. It is rather curious but the first that was married under the new act was a Bible Christian minister, at Mr. Charles KINGDON's office, Holsworthy, in 1837, viz., the late Rev. Jacob Hunt PRIOR to Miss Mary DAMRELL, the late Rev. James THORN was present. That was before the Bible Christian society had a licensed chapel in Holsworthy. The first who was married under the new act by licence was a Bible Christian minister, viz., the Rev. Nicholas HARVIE, to Miss Dorothy BRAUND of the Barton, Milton Damerell. The marriage ceremony was celebrated in the Bible Christian Chapel. During the long term that Mr. FRY has been registrar for the following parishes, of Holsworthy, Hollacombe, Pancrass week, and Pyworthy, which united parishes contained in 1881 2,650 inhabitants, far less than those united parishes contained in the year 1837, from 1837 to the present time Mr. FRY has registered 4,100 deaths and 2,500 births, excess of births over deaths 1,600, so that it is clearly seen that no less than 1,600 people whose births have been registered since 1837 to the present time are now wanting in fact gone to other parts of the world. Since 1837 to the present time Mr. FRY has registered 880 marriages, which marriages have been celebrated either at the Dissenters' chapel or the superintendent registrar's office, which will average 18 marriages per year for 47 years past and 80 marriages over. - GLEANER.
