BIDEFORD.

URBAN SANITARY AUTHORITY – Thursday. - The Mayor (Mr. HOOKWAY) in the chair. - Complaint was made of the manner in which the scavenging contractors were performing their work. Referred to the Street and Roads Committee.

TOWN COUNCIL – Thursday. - The Mayor presiding. - It was moved by Mr. BRAUND that the Mayor and Town Clerk be requested to act as a deputation from this body to the Lords of the Treasury to ask them to reconsider their decision as to refunding the proceeds of the sale of certain properties that have been expended in rebuilding the market. - Mr. ARSCOTT seconded the resolution. - Mr. DUNCAN hoped the deputation would not commit themselves to a promise to widen the quay at a possible cost of some five or six thousand pounds without some better prospect of seeing the money refunded than by the doubtful raising of coal dues. - This latter part of Mr. BRAUND's resolution being amended to calling their Lordships' attention to the urgent necessity of the money being expended on this and other like improvements, instead of appropriating it to a sinking fund, the motion was carried unanimously. - It was resolved that the subject matter of the resolution passed at the public meeting with regard to the proposed extension of the Great Western Railway to Barnstaple be embodied in a memorial from the Town Council, and the Mayor be requested to affix the seal of the Council thereto.

COUNTY POLICE. - Wednesday. - Before A. B. WREN, Esq. (in the chair), and Admiral THRUPP. - William HOBBS, landlord of the Ship Inn, Appledore, was brought up under a warrant as he did not appear on Tuesday, charged with keeping his house open during prohibited hours on the 1st January. - The defence was that while his wife and himself, who was unwell, were upstairs his clock – which is always kept half an hour fast – was put back half an hour and his wife was in consequence deceived. - Fined £2 inclusive. - Mathew ALLEN, of Northam, was charged with stealing 1s from the cash box of the King's Head, Northam. He was apprehended, but the case was postponed to Tuesday next.

COUNTY PETTY SESSIONS – Thursday. - Before T. ROGERS, Esq (in the chair), Captain MOLESWORTH, A. B. WREN, Esq., Admiral THRUPP. - Richard HEARN, of Hartland, was summoned for trespassing on lands belonging to Col. STUCLEY, on the 19th ult. Fined 6d and costs. - Handford METHERELL was summoned by Elizabeth PARKHOUSE, Appledore, to shew cause, &c. The order made was for 2s 6d a week until the child is 16 years of age. - James LEWIS, a farmer, West Putford, was summoned by Frederick OKE for the sum of £2 16s balance of wages due to him. From the evidence it appeared that defendant knew that complainant was of weak mind, and agreed with him in consequence at so much per week instead of by the year as an indoor servant. The sum agreed on was 4s a week. The defence set up was that complainant was worth nothing, but in a set off put in by the defendant he debited the applicant with 4s for two days' work. The Bench gave judgment for the full amount claimed. - Richard SLADE, William GREGORY, George HOOKWAY, W. TATHAM, W. EASTERBROOK, Edmund STEVEN, and Robert HOCKING, all of Appledore, were summoned for being in a public-house at that place on the night of the 1st January after 11 o'clock. P.C. LEE proved the case, and all defendants with the exception of TATHAM and HOCKING were fined 1s each and costs. HOCKING was fined 5s as he did not appear, and TATHAM 10s and costs because of previous convictions. - William HOBBS, landlord of the public-house in question, was summoned for keeping open his house during prohibited hours on the said night. His wife appeared and said her husband had gone to sea since. A warrant was issued for his apprehension. - William JEFFERY, of Appledore, against whom there had been several previous convictions, was sent to prison for a fortnight for drunkenness and disorderly conduct at Appledore.
