HATHERLEIGH

Rev. J. W. BAILEY, Baptist minister, preached last Sunday evening on the subject of “New Birth.” There was a large congregation, amongst which was an increased number of young people.

Mr. W. G. FRIEND, speaking in the evening in the Methodist Chapel, recalled a great revival that took place at Hatherleigh forty years ago when all the churches shared in blessing. The hope was expressed that similar results might follow during the mission of next month when Mr. F. PENFOLD visits the town.

Quite a gloom was cast over the town when it became known that Miss Lotty CLEVERDON had passed away. Deceased, who was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. CLEVERDON, of Reed, had been in indifferent health for several months, but up to within a fortnight ago there was every indication that she was getting better. She then had a stroke. Dr. MITCHELL had been in constant attendance, and a few days ago Dr. MILLER, from Exeter, was summoned to the bedside, but he pronounced the case a hopeless one. The young lady was very much beloved by a large circle of friends.

Deep regret was felt when it became known that Mrs. DOWN, of Grove Cottage, had suddenly passed away through heart failure. It appears that deceased, who had always been in very good health was in the midst of cleaning her bedroom when she suddenly fell down and expired. The funeral took place in the Parish Church on Saturday, the Rev. H. R. KRUGER officiated. The chief mourners were the husband, Messrs. Reginald, William, and Eddy KELLY (brothers), Mrs. BRAUND, Mrs. W. DOWN, Mrs. G. BALL, Mrs. R. KELLY, and Mrs. A. DOWN (sisters-in-law), Messrs. A. DOWN, W. BRAUND, G. BALL and W. DOWN (brothers-in-law), Mrs. W. BALL, Mrs. L. KELLY, and Mrs. W. DOWN (nieces), Messrs. YOUNG, W. BALL, W. DOWN, and E. KELLY (nephews). Deceased was borne to her last resting place by Messrs. S. WEBB, S. WEEKS, S. CROCKER, S. HUNKING, I. KING, and H. CUDMORE. The coffin was of polished oak with brass fittings and the breastplate indicated that deceased was thirty-three years of age. There were a large number of choice floral tributes.
