LOSS TO BIDEFORD
The Passing of Mrs. Annie C. BRAUND
Hundreds of friends in Bideford and district mourn the passing of Mrs. Annie C. BRAUND, of Windyridge, Abbotsham-road, Bideford, who for over 25 years had been a leading enthusiast in pageant and amateur stage productions in the district. Many Bidefordians and others have taken part, under her talented and enthusiastic guidance, in a long and successful series of pageants and stage performances ranging from the memorable Long Bridge reopening, the opening of the Kingsley-road, and the Coronation celebration pageants, to carefully produced dramas on a smaller scale for a more limited circle.
Mrs. BRAUND was a daughter of the late Rev. Chaloner HARROP, and a cousin of the late Mr. Stanley HOUGHTON, drama critic of the “Manchester Guardian,” and author of the famous “Hindle Wakes.”
Mrs. BRAUND was the holder of the Teacher's Diploma L.C.M. for dramatic art, and the A.L.C.M. (pianoforte), and was the representative for the Poetry Society's verse speaking examinations, and lectured on drama for the Workers' Educational Association. An accomplished elocutionist, she taught the art at a number of North Devon schools. Her husband, Mr. Frank BRAUND, is the younger son of the late Mr. William BRAUND, a former Mayor of Bideford.
The funeral at the Bideford Higher Cemetery was largely attended.
The service was conducted by Rev. A. J. JEFFRIES (supt. Methodist minister of the Bideford Circuit), who paid tribute to Mrs. BRAUND's work and influence.
