TAUNTON. - Through the exertions of the Rev. H. CRESSWELL, upwards of £16 was collected on Friday last, at Taunton, towards defraying the expenses of HUNT's friends on the scrutiny at Preston.

On Thursday last, the parish of Trull, near Taunton, gave 7 cwt. of beef to the poor, and 6d. each to 100 poor families.

Mr. CAINES, of Langport, Somerset, during the past week, held inquests upon the bodies of no less than four children who were burnt to death by their clothes taking fire, &c. during the absence of their mothers. Several accidents of a similar distressing character have recently occurred in this county also.

EXPLOSION OF A STEAM BOILER. - On Thursday evening, the 23d ult., about seven o'clock, the top of the steam boiler belonging to Mr. SANDSBURY, iron founder, North-Town, Taunton, blew off and carried masses of iron, upwards of 1 cwt. each, to a considerable distance, which fell on North-Bridge, in Mr. Mark LONG's yard adjoining, and many other places, but we have great satisfaction in stating, that not a single individual was injured, either by the falling masses or by the explosion. On examination as to the cause of the accident, it was discovered that the two nuts which fastened the top of the boiler, by means of bolts to the bottom, were burnt off, when the top flew off, as has been stated. This suggests a precautionary measure to others having steam engines with a boiler similarly constructed.

A troop of Yeomanry Cavalry is about to be raised in the Isle of Purbeck and its vicinity; under the command of John BOND, Esq.

A Society for the employment of the labouring poor has been formed at Weymouth.

The burning cliff near Weymouth is in a more active state of ignition than ever.

On the night of the 23d ult. some person or persons unknown, killed and took away the carcase of a fat sheep, the property of the Messrs. FOX, at Wellington. They left the skin in the field, and attached to it were some lines stating their intention of taking more, after having eaten that which they had then stolen.
