DIVED IN PIT FOR BOY

DRIVER FACES ALMOST CERTAIN DEATH

Plunging into the icy depths of a disused gasometer pit at the Southern Hospital, Dartford, Kent, Mr. H. V. OATEN, a motor-driver, rescued at the risk of his own life a boy patient who had escaped from the Darenth Training Colony.

The boy escaped from control last December, according to a report of the L.C.C., and fell into the tank, which contained about 8ft. of tar and water.

Mr. OATEN heard his cries and dived in, although he knew that it would be impossible to get out without assistance.

The boy was exhausted, but OATEN held him up until the attention of another patient was attracted.
