FAMILY'S LONG TENURE OF SOUTHTOWN

Prominent West Pennard farmer's death

A distinguished member of one of West Pennard's oldest farming families, Mr. Harden Sidney CREED, passed away at his home, Southtown Farm, on Thursday. He was 69 and had been in indifferent health over a considerable period.

Through his death the farm, which was built in 1611, passes into the hands of the fourth generation of this family.

Mr. CREED was born at the farm and succeeded his father, the late Mr. Sidney CREED, in 1919, the year of his marriage to Miss Martha WALL, of Little Somerford, Wiltshire.

Although the state of his health had not permitted him to take such an active part in parochial affairs of recent years, he had formerly sat on the Parish Council for a long term and had fulfilled the office of Vice-Chairman for many years.

He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Mid-Somerset Agricultural Society and its annual show, and in days gone by had won many a prize for grazing cattle at the old Shepton Mallet Christmas Fatstock Show, where he had been a familiar figure.

Much sympathy is felt for Mrs. CREED in her loss, which is mourned also by his two sons, Mr. Percy H. CREED and Mr. Hubert CREED, and his daughter, Mrs. Queenie GAY.

Burial took place on Sunday afternoon after a service in the Parish Church of St. Nicholas, conducted by the Vicar, the Rev. P. G. STUDDERT-KENNEDY. Mrs. STUDDERT-KENNEDY was at the organ and the choir led the singing of the hymns “Rock of Ages, cleft for me” and “Abide with me, fast falls the eventide.”
