STOKER GETS TWO MONTHS FOR BIGAMY.

At Somerset Assize, at Wells, Thursday, Cecil Victor WHITBURN (31), stoker, pleaded guilty to bigamy by marrying Beatrice Violet STACEY at the registry office, Taunton, during the life of his wife.

Prosecuting counsel stated that in 1926 prisoner married Elsie JOHNSON, and there was a boy eight years of age. It was alleged prisoner ill-treated his wife, so that in 1929 she could no longer live with him and obtained a maintenance order for the payment of 15/- per week for herself and 5/- a week for the child. Later defendant met Beatrice STACEY at Taunton, and went through a form of marriage with her. Miss STACEY has since given birth to a son.

WHITBURN expressed regret that he should have brought sorrow and shame on Miss STACEY. They had been happy together and he felt more affection for her than for his wife. He had “married” her to save her name.

The Judge sentenced him to two months' imprisonment in the second division to run with the sentence he was now serving.

ANOTHER BIGAMY CASE.

John Barnett MERRY (25), labourer, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment on a charge of bigamy to which he pleaded guilty.

Prosecuting counsel said MERRY was married in June, 1932 and lived with his wife until Christmas, 1934. Since then he had not lived with her, but had visited her once or twice. There was a charge outstanding against him that he had left his wife and two children chargeable to the county. In January, 1934, he met a Miss Mabel Louisa BOOBYER and went through a form of marriage with her. This woman had since given birth to a child.

Prisoner told the Judge he wished the outstanding charge against him to be taken into consideration.
