FORDGATE
IN HER 100th YEAR
DEATH OF MRS. MARTHA PYKE
North Petherton district's oldest inhabitant, Mrs. Martha PYKE, of Reeds, Fordgate, died on Saturday in her 100th year.
Mrs. PYKE, who lived with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. H. HUCKER, was a remarkable old lady, and possessed all her faculties right up to the last, being able to see and read without the aid of spectacles.
She was highly esteemed in the district. Her husband died 20 years ago. Born at Huntspill, Mrs. PYKE had eight children, six of whom are still living. There are seven grandchildren. Mrs. PYKE possessed a very retentive memory, and could remember the days of the stage coaches.
THE FUNERAL.
The funeral took place at Moorland Parish Church on Wednesday afternoon, in the presence of a representative attendance of relatives and friends. The choral service was conducted by the Rev. J. ADDY, Vicar of North Petherton. Miss SEALEY was at the organ, and the hymns sung were deceased's favourite ones, “Our blest Redeemer,” and “Abide with me.” Four children attended, and brought a beautiful wreath from their schoolmates.
The mourners were:- Messrs. G., G., and W. PYKE (sons), Mrs. SALMON, Miss E. PYKE, and Mrs. HUCKER (daughters), Mr. H. HUCKER (son-in-law), Mrs. G. PYKE and Mrs. W. PYKE (daughters-in-law), Mrs. VENN (sister-in-law), Mrs. DREW and Miss Phyllis PYKE (grand-daughters), Mr. E. SALMON (grandson), Mr. F. BREWER and Mr. A. MATRAVERS (nephews), Mrs. BREWER (niece), Mr. W. JACOBS (Weston-super-Mare), and Mr. Frank HORNSBY (Bridgwater).
The bearers were Messrs. W. J. and P. J. VENN (nephews), F. KITCH and L. GIBBS.
There were between 20 and 30 beautiful floral tributes.
