CHEDDON FITZPAINE

A MEMORABLE DAY

PARISHIONERS ENJOY FULL PROGRAMME

Special services in preparation for the Coronation were held in the Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin on Sunday, and were conducted by the Rector (the Rev. C. GRAHAM, O.B.E., R.N.).

On Coronation Day celebrations commenced at 6.30 a.m., when peals were rung by the parish ringers under Mr. F. COPHAM. A special service was held in the church at 2.15 p.m., conducted by the Rector, and was fully attended by the residents. After the service souvenir mugs were presented to all children of school age by Mrs. MILLS. During the afternoon sports were held in a field at Rowford. Children and adults took part in some very interesting events and competitions. Mr. S. SAMPSON was head of the Committee. Special gifts were made to the old folks and invalids who were unable to take active part in the festivities. Teas were provided free to all parishioners. Mrs. GRAHAM had a splendid band of lady helpers for this.

At 7.20 the speeches of the Dominion Prime Ministers, Mr BALDWIN, and H.M. The King were listened to. After this a social and dance was held in a barn, which had been nicely decorated and prepared by Mr. Walter WILLIAMS and his Committee, who also arranged the programme. A whist drive for those not taking part in the dance was held in the School-room, the M.C. being Mr. H. C. MUSGRAVE.

Children who had not gone to bed were entertained in the School-room by Mrs. COPHAM, who arranged various indoor games for them.

PUPPIES AS SKITTLES PRIZES.

During the afternoon a skittles competition was held. Mr. W. AISH was in charge. The skittles outfit was lent by Mr. F. C. SPEAR (Mayor of Taunton), Mr. M. WHITE, of Nerrols, gave two valuable spaniel puppies for the first prizes.

Ice cream was provided during the afternoon and evening. Mrs. HERRING and Miss B. WILLIAMS were the distributors. Beer and cider was available for those who required it, and was issued under the direction of Mr. MUSGRAVE.

The village was tastefully decorated by a Committee, under the leadership of Miss BYWATERS, the district nurse. The heavy rain on Tuesday, however, did a lot of damage to this. Music during the afternoon and evening was provided by means of an amplifier. The field and barn were lent by Mr. H. C. MUSGRAVE, of Upper Cheddon Farm. Tables, trestles, and lamps were also kindly lent by Hon. Mrs. E. PORTMAN.

Funds for the festivities were provided by a house-to-house collection, which was made by Mrs. MUSGRAVE, Mrs. NORMMAN, Mrs. PLEASS, Miss BUTLER, and Miss BYWATERS.

Colonel C. D. G. LYON was chairman of the General Committee, and the thanks of all are due to them for having done so much to make the day a success and one which will be memorable. Captain W. H. HERRING was the hon. secretary.
