TAUNTON CARNIVAL QUEEN
TO WED A FORTNIGHT HENCE
TO-DAY'S BIG PROGRAMME
Miss Theresa Lilian NEWTON, who will [?] the Queen of the Taunton Hospitals' Carnival[?] to-day (Saturday), is to be married[?] on September 11th. She is to be the bride[?] of Mr. Frank MANNING, of 6, Alfred-street[?], Taunton, and her sister, Betty, who will[?] be one of her attendants in the Carnival[?], will be a bridesmaid.
The Carnival Queen, who is a 21-year-old[?] factory employee, has attained “royal” [?] by the desire of the townspeople, [?] chose her at a public ceremony in [?] Vivary Park.
CROWNING CEREMONY.
She will be crowned by the Mayor, Councillor[?] F. C. SPEAR, in the Park at 3.15 [?] afternoon. At six o'clock this evening [?] “state” carriage will lead the carnival procession[?] through the streets of the town, starting[?] from the Victoria Recreation Ground[?].
The “Queen” is the daughter of Mrs. A. NEWTON[?], of 19, Roman-road.
The “Princess,” Audrey MATTHEWS, who, with[?] her attendants, will lead the children's[?] carnival procession at 2.30 this afternoon[?], will also be crowned by the Mayor[?] at the ceremony in the Park.
LAUGHTER AND GAIETY.
Sunshine is all that is needed to-day to [?] the seal of complete success on the efforts[?] of the carnival promotors.
Nothing that organisation can achieve has been left undone; the numbers of entries for the processions – both tableaux and masqueraders – constitute records; and there will be a continuous round of attractions at a monster fete in the Vivary Park from two o'clock until 11.30 p.m.
At least five bands will take part in tonight's pageant. Historic tableaux and humorous features will be well represented. The unconventional attire of residents – incognito for once in the year – will add[?] to the laughter and gaiety to be found everywhere[?].
Everybody can play his or her part today[?] by helping generously to swell the carnival[?] funds. The Hospital and other deserving[?] charities, in turn, will benefit.
CROWN JEWELS.
Replicas of the Crown jewels, lent by [?] “Daily Sketch,” are being exhibited [?] the Committee-rooms, 17, East-street, [?] aid of the funds. The rooms are placed [?] the disposal of the Committee by Mr. F. [?].
Last[?] night (Friday) a carnival ball took [?] in the Town Hall.
Skittling[?] competitions have been in process[?] near the Produce Market and in [?] Green for the past fortnight.
