NORTH PETHERTON

ANCIENT GUILDS. - At the Toc H Room on Wednesday evening, the Rev. H. E. FIELD gave an interesting talk on the formation of Ancient Guilds in London.

FIRST AID LECTURES. - At the Council Schools on Tuesday evening next, Dr. H. T. BEGGS will conduct the second of a series of first-aid lectures. Residents interested are invited to attend, and a special invitation is extended to ladies.

CRICKET. - The following team has been selected to meet Trull at Parkersfield to-day:- J. G. SELLICK (captain), E. POCOCK, W. MORRELL, F. VICKERY, F. JONES, G. CARTER, L. GRAY, P. POCOCK, L. RETALLACK, H. FORGAN, and J. DUNN.

CRICKET. - North Petherton Cricket Club team to play Trull, at North Petherton to-day, is:- J. G. SELLICK (captain), E. POCOCK, W. MORRELL, F. VICKERY, F. JONES, G. CARTER, L. GRAY, P. C. POCOCK, L. RETALLACK, H. FORGAN, J. DUNN. Wickets pitched at 2.45 p.m.

HARVEST THANKSGIVING. - The Methodist Church was tastefully decorated for the harvest thanksgiving services on Sunday. - The Rev. Franklin BLAKE conducted the morning service. - At the evening service the Rev. W. HARVEY preached to a large congregation, and the singing was led by the organ and orchestra.

FUNERAL OF MRS. M. BURGE. - The funeral took place at the Cemetery on Saturday of Mrs. Mary BURGE, whose death was reported in our issue of last week. The first part of the service, conducted by the Vicar, the Rev. J. ADDY, was held at St. Mary's Church. The chief mourners were:- Mr. J. BURGE (son), Mrs. S. HUNT, Mrs. H. MILLER, Miss O. BURGE (daughters), Mr. H. MILLER and Mr. S. HUNT (sons-in-law), Mr. R. HUNT (grandson), Mr. and Mrs. A. J. BRADBEER.

LATE MRS. R. A. TUCKER

The Vicar, the Rev. J. ADDY, conducted the funeral service at the Cemetery, on Wednesday afternoon, of Mrs. R. A. TUCKER, who passed away on Sunday. Mrs. TUCKER, who was 60 years of age, resided at Pilots Elms. She leaves a husband and daughter, for whom much sympathy is felt.

The family mourners were:- Mr. W. TUCKER (husband), Mr. and Mrs. S. HOOPER (son-in-law and daughter), Miss P. HOOPER (grand-daughter).

There were many beautiful floral tributes.

MANY WHIST PRIZES

DRIVE FOR THE RENOVATION FUND

Twenty-seven tables were occupied at a whist drive in the Church Sunday School-room on Thursday, held in aid of the Room Renovation Fund. The drive was organised by Mrs. E. WIGLEY, sen., and the Vicar, the Rev. J. ADDY, was the M.C. Mr. J. PYKE won he champion prize (after a cut with Miss A. POOLE) of 5 cwt. of coal given by Mr. C. COUSINS.

Twenty-eight hands were played. Mrs. ADDY presented the prizes to the following winners:-

Ladies – 1, Miss A. POOLE, 212 (biscuit-barrel, giv n by Mrs. WALLBRIDGE); 2, Mrs. C. J. THOMAS, 200 (5s voucher, Mrs. W. H. PALMER); 3, Mrs. M. E. DAY, 198 (Pyrex dish, Mrs. PERRY); 4, Mrs. W. M. JONES, 197 (table cloth, Miss P. CORAM); 5, Mrs. F. ROBERTS, 196 (sardine dish, a friend); 6, Mrs. F. HAWKINS, 194 (vanity case, Miss BRADBURY); lowest score, Mrs. G. HOOPER, 159.

Gentlemen or ladies playing as gentlemen – 1, Mr. D. FOSTER, 207 (rug, Mrs. HOUSE); 2, Mrs. M. WIGLEY, 204 (flower bowl, Miss COLES); 3, Mrs. W. MAJOR, 199 (table-cloth and serviettes, Miss RUMSBY); 4, Mr. CHAPMAN, 198 (saw, Mr. SHAPTER); 5, Mrs. E. HODGE, 196 (socks, Messrs. HEPWORTH, Bridgwater); 6, Mr. H. FORGAN, 195 (bread-knife, Mr. W. CARTER); lowest score, Mr. A. W. WATERJOHNS, 157.

The chair competition, in charge of Miss G. CHIDGEY, was won by Mrs. G. CRIDDLE, after a cut with Mrs. C. DUNN, the winning n mber being 213. Mrs. A. L. LAVIS (No. 171), won the box of chocolates competition, supervised by Miss Joan WILLIAMS.
