LATE MR. J. NORLEY
SURVIVED WAR: WOUNDED AT HOME
The funeral took place at North Petherton Cemetery on Monday afternoon of Mr. James NORLEY, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. HAWKINS, of 19, Kings-square, Bridgwater, on the previous Thursday at the age of 75 years.
Mr. NORLEY, who was a native of Fordgate, joined the Coldstream Guards in 1879, and served through he Egyptian campaign. In 1884-5 he was with the force sent to the relief of General GORDON. He was subsequently awarded the appropriate medal with two bars, the bronze star, “Egypt to Khartoum.” and the special campaign pension.
Mr. NORLEY used to relate with amusement how he served through the hazards of the forced desert march without a wound, and came home to be “peppered” by a careless sportsman shooting rabbits on one side of a hedge while he was on the other side. His cap was riddled, but only one pellet entered his scalp.
The Vicar of North Petherton, Rev. J. ADDY, officiated.
The mourners were:- Mr. and Mrs. HAWKINS (son-in-law and daughter); Mr. and Mrs. LEWIS (son-in-law and adopted daughter); Mr. and Mrs. FOWLER, of Derby (brother-in-law and sister); Mr. Walter NORLEY (brother); Mr. and Mrs. David GODFREY (brother-in-law and sister-in-law); Mrs. SYMES (niece).
