RED CROSS APPEAL

LOCAL SUPPORT FOR NATIONAL FUND

Mr. John SLOCOMBE, supported by the Rev. P. T. PRYCE-MICHELL, chairman of the Bridgwater Rural District Council, and Mr. L. H. PALMER, presided at a Parish Meeting in the Memorial Hall on Monday evening to discuss methods of supporting the Lord Mayor of London's National Appeal Fund on behalf of the Red Cross Society and the St. John Ambulance Joint Fund.

The Chairman, outlining the good work of these institutions, said he was confident that residents would support the appeal.

The Rev. P. T. PRYCE-MICHELL said that a flag-day was recently organised, but the present appeal would continue for the duration of the war. Rich and poor alike, he knew from experience, would assist the brave men who had answered the call of their King and Country to defend us from the experiences which were the lot of some Europeans. Should our Army hostilities be intensified the work of these bodies would be tremendous. So far £706,000 had been subscribed throughout the country. The Mayor of Bridgwater, Mr. L. H. PALMER, had sent a handsome cheque for the amount subscribed by the townspeople in response to his appeal. Good results had been received from some villages to the appeal, and a cheque had already been dispatched to the Fund.

The following Committee was appointed to organise a house-to-house collection in the village:- Mrs. R. N. C. GROVE (convenor), Mrs. J. BOND, Mrs. T. G. WILKINS, Mrs. W. D. McCREATH, Messrs. C. W. STONE, and F. POCOCK. The following Committee was appointed to organise a whist drive:- Messrs. T. J. CLATWORTHY (convenor), A. CHIVERS, W. CLATWORTHY, and B. J. CLATWORTHY.

Mr. CLATWORTHY appealed for prizes for a whist drive, on Thursday, December 14th, and quickly received the necessary response.
