NORTH PETHERTON

THE RUGBY CLUB. - A report of the annual meeting of the North Petherton Rugby Club appears under a full heading in this issue.

CRICKET. - North Petherton cricket team to visit Trull to-day is:- F. W. JONES (captain), F. VICKERY, H. EVANS, W. W. MORRELL, R. J. HADDON, W. C. PADDON, W. P. NORMAN, G. T. CARTER, R. HURFORD, H. FORGAN, and C. POCOCK. 'Bus leaves 2.15 p.m. sharp.

BARONET FINED. - Sir Alfred SLADE, Bart., of “Mansel,” North Petherton, was fined £2 at Taunton Borough Court on Wednesday for driving a motor-car and trailer without an efficient reflecting mirror being fitted to the car. P.C. E. THOMAS stated that he saw the car and trailer stationary in North-street at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25th. The trailer was higher than the car itself and carried a horse. The car had no reflecting mirror and when he asked Sir Alfred for an explanation he declined to give any. He also refused to let witness sit in the car to see if a view of the rear could be obtained. There was a small mirror inside the car but he pointed out to Sir Alfred that it was impossible for him to see anything behind except the trailer.

HIS LAMP STOLEN

Thomas William Henry RUCKLEY, of Cemetery Cottage, North Petherton, was summoned at the County Sessions, Bridgwater, on Thursday for riding a bicycle without a light at 10.35 p.m. on 13th August. P.C. MORELL said defendant had no lamp Defendant told him his lamp was stolen outside 68, Ashleigh-avenue, Bridgwater, that night. - He was fined 7s 6d.

WHITEHEAD PRIZE

Mr. David R. LLOYD, of the Midland Bank, Trowbridge, a native of North Petherton and educated at the Taunton School, has had the distinction of winning the Whitehead Prize for Practice and Law of Banking. Part II., in the Institute of Bankers Associate Examination.

Of nearly 15,000 candidates 955 completed Part II, of the examination and 1,429 Part I.

Mr. LLOYD is the second son of Rev. David LLOYD, Taunton.

LATE MRS. T. BOND-CHAPMAN

The funeral took place on Friday, of Mrs. BOND-CHAPMAN, whose death was reported in our issue of last week.

The first part of the service, conducted by the Vicar, the Rev. J. ADDY, was held at St. Mary's Church, and preceded the interment at the Cemetery. The high esteem in which the late Mrs. CHAPMAN was held, was manifested by the large attendance.

The family mourners were:- Mr. T. BOND-CHAPMAN (widower), Mr. H. LAILEY and Mr. A. LAILEY (brothers), Mr. and Mrs. A. CHAPMAN, Mr. and Mrs. R. CHAPMAN, Mr. and Mrs. H. CHAPMAN (brother-in-law and sisters-in-law).

Among others present were: The Mayor and Mayoress of Bridgwater, Captain T. MERSON, Mr and Miss CARNE-WILLIAMS, Mr. R. BRUFORD, Mr. T. A. BAIRD, Mr. J. PULLEN, MR. W. WHITE, Mr. and Miss LUDLOW, Mr. W. NORMAN, and Miss NORMAN, Mr. and Mrs. WAY, Mrs. GLOYN, Mr. and Mrs. COMER, Mr. Gordon SKINNER, Mrs. WEBBER, and Miss WEBBER, Mr. and Mrs. H. BROWN, Mrs. A. A. BROUGHTON, Mr. NAISH, Mr. PENNINGTON, Miss GUDGE, Messrs. J. and W. PIKE, and W. DAVEY, and many others.

There was a large number of beautiful floral tributes.

CONSERVATIVE GARDEN PARTY

MANY ATTRACTIONS AT SHOVEL HOUSE.

TENNIS AND OTHER WINNERS.

A successful garden party, organised by the North Petherton Conservative and National Unionist Association, was held at Shovel House on Thursday afternoon, by kind permission of Brig.-General H. NELSON and Mrs. NELSON.

Mr. Pat AMORY, prospective candidate for the Bridgwater Division, visited the party during the evening.

Ten couples, playing 45 games each, took part in an American tennis handicap tournament, organised by Messrs. R. N. C. GROVE and H. EVANS.

Attractions included darts, fishing for corks, treasure trove, spinning jenny, bull board, quoits, putting, and skittling for ladies and men.

Amusements were in charge of the following:- Miss COATE, Miss I. TODD, Mrs. LOTT, Messrs. B. BROUGHTON, F. SENDELL, R. LOCK, C. C. HUNT, R. QUICK, E. WIGLEY, (senr.), G. WIGLEY, H. RIDGE, and helpers.

Refreshments were served by Mrs. T. J. WILKINS, Mrs. W. D. McCREATH, Mrs. W. CARTER, Mrs. HOLLINGHURST, and the Misses E. and A. POOLE.

TENNIS WINNERS.

The tennis tournament was won by Mr. T. J. M. BARRINGTON and Miss J. BROUGHTON (37-8). They waived their right to the prizes in favour of the runners-up. Mr. and Mrs. C. BINDING (33-12), who received a case of spoons, given by Mr. R. N. C. GROVE, and a handbag given by Mrs. DANIELS.

Other winners were:- Mr. H. EVANS and Mrs. HAWKINS (29-16), cigarette case, presented by Lord St. ANDRIES, and a writing case given by Brig.-General NELSON: Mrs. SWAYNE and Mrs. SEALEY, guest towels given by Mrs. NELSON, and jug, Mrs. DANIELS.

WHIST DRIVE.

A whist drive was held during the evening at Shovel House, Mr. W. WATERJOHN being the M.C.

Prize-winners were:- Ladies – 1, Mrs. FOSTER, tea cloth given by Mrs. GROVE; 2, Mrs. AISH, bath and face towels, Mrs. GROVE; 3, Mrs. BOOBIER, pillow case set, Mrs. NELSON. Men – 1, Mrs. TUTTY, case of knives, Mrs. C. F. HAWKINS; 2, Mr. COX; fifty cigarettes, North Petherton Conservative Association; 3. Mr. MURLEY, plate glass dish and spoon, Lord St. Audries.

Winners of the putting competition were:- 1, Messrs. R. and A. BALLANTINE, Nether Stowey?; 2, Mr. and Mrs. HOLLINGHURST.

A competition, organised by Mrs. and Miss BROUGHTON, was won by Miss R. COLES, Bridgwater, the prize being given by Mr. W. D. McCREATH.

SKITTLE WINNERS.

Winners of the skittling competitions were:-

Ladies – 1, Mrs. GODFREY; 2, Mrs. PRIDDLE; 3, Miss ADDICOTT.

Men – 1 and 2, Messrs. W. and C. COATE; 3, Mr. W. FOSTER.

The skittling prizes were given by Mrs. NELSON and members of the Association.

The prizes were distributed by Mrs. NELSON.

Mr. GROVE thanked Brig.-General and Mrs. NELSON for their kind hospitality and on behalf of the tennis players for the use of the courts.

Gate stewards were Messrs. E. SAUNDERS, W. HUMPHREY, B. TOWNSEND, and F. POCOCK.
