HUISH EPISCOPI

ST. GEORGE'S-DAY OBSERVANCES at Huish Episcopi on Sunday incuded a church parade of members of the Langport and Huish Company of Girl Guides, in charge of their captain, Miss R. HARDINGE. They attended the evening service at St. Mary's Church, and were addressed by the Vicar (the Rev T. O A. SELLICK) on “Loyalty.” The preacher said it was a great pity that old-fashioned patriotism had lost its force in the world to-day. What was needed was loyalty in the home and loyalty to King and country These loyalties would be easy if the greatest of all loyalties was observed – loyalty to our neighbours and to God. During the day the Union Jack was flown from the War Memorial flag-mast.

MOTORISTS' ESCAPE

A Devon motorist and his passenger had a remarkable escape from injury when the motor-car in which they were travelling collided with an electric light standard at Pibsbury-corner on Friday evening. The car, which was being driven by Mr. J. A. WOOD, of Northam, Devon, was proceeding from London towards Langport, and in negotiating the sharp bend at Pibsbury, mounted the grass verge, the standard was broken in two. The driver and his companion were unhurt, although the car was considerably damaged.

FIFTY-FIVE YEARS MARRIED

MR. AND MRS. W. E. SHEPPARD'S ANNIVERSARY

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Edward SHEPPARD, of The Bungalow, Coombe, will celebrate the 55th anniversary of their wedding on Sunday. They were married at St. Mary's Church, Huish Episcopi, on April 30th, 1884, by the late Rev. Joseph STUBBS. Mr. SHEPPARD, who is aged 76 years, is a son of the late Mr. William SHEPPARD, of Plot Stream Farm, Aller. A year her husband's junior, Mrs. SHEPPARD, is the only surviving child of the late Mr. Charles CROSSMAN, of Bowdens, Huish Episcopi. They have enjoyed more years of married life than any other couple in the village.

Both still enjoy remarkably good health, and are particularly active. Mrs. SHEPPARD regularly walks to the Parish Church on Sunday mornings, a distance of over a mile.

There are nine children of the marriage, ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

CONCERT FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL FUNDS

Owing to the Church-room having been previously engaged, the concert in aid of the funds of the Sunday School was held in the All Saints'-room, Langport, on Wednesday evening. A large audience was present, and all thoroughly enjoyed a captial variety programme. The first half was taken up by the presentation of a two-act play, entitled “Hotel Reposo,” by the Huish Episcopi Players. This was produced by the Rev. T. O. A. SELLICK, who had selected a cast all of whom suited their parts admirably. The players were Mrs. S. E. SCOTT, Mrs. E. J. SHEPPARD, Miss N. HAWES, Mrs. T. O.A. SELLICK, Mrs. C. H. COATE, Mr. A. MANNING, Mr. S. BOND and the Rev. T. O. A. SELLICK. The stage manager was Mr. R. MITCHELL.

Other items in the programme, which was warmly appreciated, included songs by Mr. J. OSMOND (Langport), and the Dodd Bros., of Wells, conjuring by Mr. V. C. KERRISON (Hambridge) piano accordion selections by Mr. LINHAM (Wells), and an amusing monologue by Mrs. V. C. KERRISON. Accompaniments were played by Miss P. COATE.

At the close the Rev. T. O. A. SELLICK expressed thanks to the performers and all who had contributed to the success of the entertainment, and specially thanked the Rev. E. L. NOEL-COX (vicar of Langport) for allowing the use of the All Saint's-room.

Messrs. E. J. SHEPPARD and D. SUTER were the door stewards.
