NORTH PETHERTON

CHILDREN ENTERTAINED. - At the Memorial Hall on Boxing-day afternoon, 150 school-children, including evacuees, were entertained to a cinema show by Mr. G. H. GARDNER. The films were interspersed with the singing of popular songs.

A GOOD RESPONSE. - In response ot the appeal by the Chairman of the Bridgwater Rural District Council, on behalf of the Lord Mayor's Fund for the Red Cross and St. John Ambulance Association, the sum of £36 10s 1d has been raised in the village. House-to-house collections amounted to £27 3s 9d, whist drive proceeds £7 10s 10d, and donations £1 15s 6d. A further sum of £5 has been raised by the parishioners of the Northmoor Green Ward of the parish.

RUGBY CLUB DANCE. - A company of nearly 200, including parties from Taunton and Bridgwater, attended a dance, organised by the Rugby Club, at the George Assembly-rooms on Boxing night. Mr. E. OSMAN was the M.C., and the Rhythmites Dance Band played. Refreshments were served by the Ladies' Committee, Mrs. F. JONES being the convenor. The proceeds were for the Red Cross and St. John Ambulance Association and the Rugby Club funds.

LATE MRS. MELLHUISH. - The death took place on Wednesday of last week of Mrs. Kate MELLHUISH, of Tapper's-lane at the age of 73 years. She was a native of Blagdon, near Taunton, and had lived in the village for the past three years. Much sympathy has been expressed with the husband, son and daughter in their loss. The funeral took place at the cemetery on Saturday. The Vicar, the Rev. J. ADDY, officiated. The family mourners were:- Mr. W. MELLHUISH, husband; Miss D. MELLHUISH, daughter; Mr. and Mrs. V. MELLHUISH, son and daughter-in-law.

DEATH OF MRS. WILLIAMS. - The death occurred on Christmas-day, after an illness of three months, patiently born, of Mrs. Ellen WILLIAMS, of Victoria-road. Mrs. WILLIAMS was 61 years of age. Much sympathy is felt for the husband and family in their sad bereavement. The funeral conducted by the Rev. S. J. ROBINS, took place at the cemetery on Thursday afternoon. The family mourners were:- Mr. W. WILLIAMS (husband), Mrs. NORTON (daughter), Mr. F. WILLIAMS, Mr. H. WILLIAMS, and Mr. B. WILLIAMS (sons), Miss R. UPHAM (sister), Mr. F. NORTON (son-in-law), Mrs. E. HARDWIDGE (friend). Others present included Mrs. S. HUBBARD, Mrs. A. HUBBARD, and Miss PYKE. There was a large number of beautiful floral tributes.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TREAT

Children attending St. Mary's Church Sunday School were entertained to their annual Christmas treat at the Church Sunday School-room, on Thursday. The Vicar, the Rev. J. ADDY and Mrs. ADDY were present. The children enjoyed an entertainment programme, arranged by Mrs. W. MAJOR and Miss A. JENKINS.

The programme consisted of a two-act juvenile play, entitled “A Real Fairy.” the characters being:- Mrs. Jennerous (a good-natured lady) Marjery NEWBERRY; Kitty (her daughter), Elizabeth UPHAM; Charlie (her son), Cedric MILLER; Carrie KINDNESS (their friend), Hazel SELLICK; Mrs WORKARD (a poor widow), Mavis TURNER; Johnny (her invalid son), Stanley MUTTERS; Joe (her idle son), Edna MAJOR; a playlet, “Peter and Polly.” those taking part being:- Peter, Dennis HODGE; Polly, Maureen GARDNER; Wicked Imp, William WALFORD; Father Christmas, Miss A. JENKINS. There were carols by Marion STOODLEY, and singing by the children, conducted by Miss SELLICK.

Tea was prepared by Mrs. J. JENKINS and served to the children by the teachers and friends. Each child was presented with a gift from an illuminated Christmas tree by Father Christmas. Mrs. ADDY distributed the Sunday School prizes to the successful children.

NORTH PETHERTON BRIDES

MR. GAGE AND MISS LOTT

Considerable interest was shown in the wedding, which took place at the Parish Church on Saturday, of Miss Ruby Elizabeth LOTT, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. LOTT, of Trelawn, North Petherton, and Mr. Frederick Albert GAGE, only son of Mrs. GAGE and the late Mr. A. GAGE, of 11, Marina-road, Bridgwater. The Vicar, the Rev. J. ADDY, performed the ceremony. As the bride entered the church the organist, Mr. W. HUMPHREY, played Wagner's bridal march.

Given away by her father, the bride was charmingly attired in a dress of white satin trimmed with orange blossom, with coronet and veil. She carried a shower bouquet of white chrysanthemums. Attending the bride were her two sisters, Joan and Joyce. The elder bridesmaid, Miss Joan LOTT, wore a dress of mauve taffeta, with halo to match, and silver shoes. Joyce wore a dress of green crepe-de-chine, with coronet to match and silver shoes. They carried posies of double violets and white heather, and wore gold bangles, the gift of the bridegroom.

Mr. D. FOSTER was the “best man.”

Mendelssohn's “Wedding March” was played by the organist as Mr. and Mrs. GAGE left the church.

A reception, attended by 30 guests, was held at the home of the bride's parents. Mr. and Mrs. GAGE received a large number of presents, including a silver-plated cake basket, from the Manager and staff of the British Home Stores, Taunton, of which the bride was a member.

MR. POPE AND MISS STONE.

The marriage was solemnised at the Parish Church on Saturday, by the Rev. J. ADDY, of Miss Phyllis Elvina STONE, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest STONE, of Taunton-road, North Petherton, and Mr. George Henry POPE, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. George Henry POPE, of 174, Kendale-road, Bridgwater.

The bride, who was given away by her uncle Mr. C. PARKER, wore a costume of Air Force blue, with hat and shoes to match. She wore a spray of Christmas roses and fern. Mr. R. SWEETING, brother-in-law of the bridegroom, was the “best man.”

A large number of guests attended a reception at the home of the bride's parents.

Mr. and Mrs. POPE received many useful presents, including a clock from fellow employees of the bridegroom at the British Cellophane Works, Bridgwater.
