CONCERT FOR COMFORTS

LOCAL MEN FROM H.M.S. EXETER HONOURED.

Two Bridgwater men who served in H.M.S. Exeter at the Battle of the Plate were honoured at a concert in the Odeon Theatre on Sunday night. They were Signalman WHITING, of Friarn-street, and Able-Seaman CHEDGEY, of Market-street.

An audience of over a thousand attended the concert, which was organised by the local Committee of the Incorporated Soldiers' and Sailors' Help Society to provide comforts for the Navy and its Auxiliaries. The programme was arranged by Mr. F. A. WILSHIRE, of Bristol, the Recorder of Bridgwater, who had secured the services of several well-known artistes from Bristol. The items included selections by the Quantock Vale Concert Orchestra, led by Mr. Bert BOWN and conducted by Mr. A. V. TOUT; songs, Mr. George WALSH, Miss Ida Blythe WILLIS and Mr. A. E. STEPHENS; The Mackenzie Twins, in selections from their repertoire; community singing; and musical sketches by Mr. WILSHIRE and Mr. Clifford HELLIER, the latter also being accompanist and compere.

During an interval in the first half, the Mayor, Mr. W. J. FARTHING, and Mr. WILSHIRE referred to the good work the Society was doing, and the number of comforts despatched from the local depot at 12, King-square.

Mr. WILSHIRE introduced Signalman WHITING and Able-Seaman CHEDGEY, and Mrs. M. R. BERNARD, of Stawell, district representative of the Society, presented each with a complete set of knitted comforts and 100 cigarettes.
