NORTH PETHERTON

“BLACK-OUT” FINE. - Miss Edith BELL, of “The Beeches,” Fore-street, was fined £2 at Bridgwater on Friday for infringing the “black-out.”

THE METHODIST CHURCH was tastefully decorated with fruit, vegetables, and flowers on Sunday on the occasion of the harvest thanksgiving services. Mr. V. H. MAY, Bridgwater, conducted the morning service, and Mr. T. H. GULLIDGE, of Aller, was the preacher in the evening. Both services were well attended. The festival was continued on Wednesday evening, when the Rev. W. H. HARVEY, of Bridgwater, conducted the meeting. Following the services the gifts were sold in aid of church funds.

DEATH OF MR. G. COURTENAY

The death occurred at his residence, Lingfield, Fore-street, on Wednesday, after a long illness, of Mr. George COURTENAY, aged 71 years. He was a native of Devon and well known in agricultural circles. He came to reside in the village from Middlezoy a year ago. He leaves a wife and daughter, for whom much sympathy has been expressed. The funeral takes place at Knowstone, near South Molton, on Monday afternoon.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TREAT

The Sunday School children of the Congregational Church spent an enjoyable time on Tuesday, when they were entertained to a picnic tea and sports in Tucker's field. The children usually visit Weston-super-Mare for their annual outing, but, owing to certain difficulties, it was thought necessary to return to the old-time method of a school treat. A programme of games and sports followed tea, and each child was awarded a present. Arrangements were made by the Rev. S. J. ROBINS, Messrs. S. T. CLATWORTHY and C. W. STONE, Sunday School Superintendents, assisted by the teachers.
