NORTH PETHERTON

PLOUGHING AT 80

DEATH OF MR. DAVE GODFREY

A link with the days when ploughing was done with teams of oxen has been broken by the death on Monday, at the age of 80 years of Mr. Dave GODFREY, of Huntworth.

Mr. GODFREY started work at nine years of age for threepence a day, and was employed on Huntworth Park Farm for over 60 years. He continued to plough right up to last Saturday.

In his younger days he was one of the best ploughmen in the county. He had won over £100 at ploughing matches and no fewer than 13 cups in athletic events.

He was taken ill only the day before his death. He leaves a wife, two sons, and six daughters. The funeral was on Thursday, at North Petherton Cemetery.

CONGREGATION MISSIONS

The Congregational Church annual mission meeting was held at the Memorial Hall on Tuesday evening when the Rev. WITNEY, of Salem, India, described mission work in that part. The missionary Hon. Secretary, Mr. G. WHITE, gave his annual statement, and a slight increase in the contribution remitted to headquarters was shown.

FUNERAL OF MR. G. LAVIS

The funeral took place on Saturday of Mr. George LAVIS, whose death was reported last week. A service at the Congregational Church, conducted by the Rev. S. J. ROBINS, preceded the interment at the cemetery.

The service was choral, and the organist, Mr. A. J. BRADBEER, played appropriate music as the cortege entered and left the church. The hymns were “Jesu, Lover of my soul,” and “Lead, kindly Light.”

The mourners were Messrs. Fred, William and Alfred LAVIS (sons), Messrs. James and William LAVIS (brothers), Mr. Clifford SEALEY (son-in-law), Messrs. F. LAVIS and W. PADDON (nephews), Mr. Leslie LAVIS (grandson), Messrs. George and Charles LAVIS (cousins), Miss E. LAVIS and Mr. W. FARTHING, Messrs. C. W. CLATWORTHY, B. J. CLATWORTHY and E. MILLER represented Messrs. John Clatworthy & Sons.

The bearers were Messrs, Albert, Bert, Charles and Tom LAVIS.
