BRITISH LEGION

FUNERAL TRIBUTE

LATE MR. E. V. FOSTER,

NORTH CURRY

BIG LOSS TO THE VILLAGE

Mr. Eric Victor FOSTER, the well-known proprietor of Foster's Garage, North Curry, died on Sunday morning in his home. He leaves a wife, two sons, and one daughter, to whom much sympathy has been extended.

Mr. FOSTER, who was 48, was born at North Curry, and had taken a great interest in many of its activities. His business connections had made him well known and highly respected over a wide area. A keen churchman, he had been a churchwarden for five years. He was a member of the local “Pride of the Moors” Lodge of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes.

He served throughout the Great War in the Royal Navy, and held the rank of petty-officer. He was serving on H.M.S. Collingwood at the same time as King George, and in the last stages of the war was engaged on minesweeping duty. The problems of his fellow ex-Service men claimed his active interest after the war, and he was the secretary of the local branch of the British Legion.

Reference to Mr. FOSTER's death was made at Sunday's services at the Parish Church by the Vicar, the Rev. H. Jocelyn DAVIES, who said the Patronal Festival had been marred this year, not only by the war, but also by the passing of a devoted and conscientious warden. Paying tribute to Mr. FOSTER's work for the church, the vicar mentioned that he had missed only three services on Sundays in the past four years.

LARGE FUNERAL ATTENDANCE

The esteem in which Mr. FOSTER was held was shown by the large assembly of mourners at the funeral on Thursday, the Parish Church being almost filled to capacity.

Members of the local branch of the British Legion, headed by the standard-bearer, marched in front of the family mourners in the family mourners to the church, where the body had rested overnight.

The coffin was covered by a large Union Jack.

The choral service was conducted by the Vicar. Mr. L. SHEPPARD, of Huish Episcopi, was at the organ, and he opened the service by playing “O Rest in the Lord.” The hymns sung were “Jesus Lives,” “Thine for ever,” and “Peace, perfect peace”; and the 23rd Psalm, “The Lord is my Shepherd,” was chanted.

After the organist had rendered Chopin's “Funeral March,” the congregation sang the Nunc Dimittis as the coffin was being borne from the church by Messrs. E. WADHAM, C. TRENCHARD, C. E. PESTER (Legion members), and A. BELLRINGER.

At the close of the service Mr. SHEPPARD played the “Dead March in Saul. The interment followed in the churchyard.
