NORTH PETHERTON ACCIDENT VICTIM

LATE MRS. E. ROBERTS

The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon of Mrs. Ellen Sarah Elston ROBERTS, who died on Saturday at the Bridgwater Hospital following a road accident in Fore-street, North Petherton, the same afternoon.

Mrs. ROBERTS was walking with her niece, Mrs. CARTER, when she was involved in a collision with an Army lorry. Mrs. CARTER was uninjured.

Mrs. ROBERTS was well-known in the village, and for many years took a keen interest in St. Mary's Church, the Sunday School, and other youth organisations. She was a member of the Ladies' Committee of the North Petherton Horticultural Society, and an exhibitor and prize-winner at the annual show. She gave valuable service as a member of the Ladies' Committee of the local Rugby Club. Also connected with the Nursing Association, she gave untiring service to the infirm and aged, by whom she will be greatly missed.

VICAR'S TRIBUTE.

The high esteem in which she was held was manifested by the large number of friends present at the funeral service. This took place at St. Mary's Church, and was conducted by the Vicar, the Rev. J. ADDY, Mr. W. HUMPHREY (organist) played appropriate music. The hymn, “The strife is o'er, the battle's won,” was sung.

The Vicar bore testimony to the late Mrs. ROBERTS. The shock of her passing, he said, had touched them all deeply but he asked them to remember the way of her living. “I beg you to remember the way she loved this House, and the wonderful service she rendered in it,” said the Vicar, “and the service she rendered through long years to the old and infirm, always cheerfully, and never looking for gratitude.” In the quarter of a century he had been associated with her, he could not remember one word or one action that pained by all that pleased.

The burial took place at the Cemetery, the grave being lined with evergreens and flowers.

The coffin of English oak with surmounted cross bore the inscription:- “Ellen Sarah Elston Roberts, died May 31st, aged 68 years.”
