FIGHTING FIRE BOMBS

APPEAL FOR VOLUNTEERS.

At a parish meeting on Tuesday evening, Mr. J. W. CONOLLY, chief officer of the Bridgwater and District Fire Brigade, gave a lecture on fighting fire bombs.

Mr. J. SLOCOMBE, chairman of the Parish Council presided, and there were also present Mr. W. J. POTTER, hon. deputy chief officer, Bridgwater and District Fire Brigade, Mr. H. G. BLAY, clerk Bridgwater Rural District Council, Mr. L. H. PALMER, clerk Parish Council, Mr. L. S. CLATWORTHY, and Mr. S. H. BELL, A.R.P. Organiser for North Petherton.

The Chairman said he felt sure there would be no lack of volunteers for the fire fighting services.

Mr. CONOLLY said incendiary bombs might cause many fires at the same time, and he appealed to residents to form parties to act as fire spotters, and to join the fire fighting services.

North Petherton had an auxiliary fire service, but, this was inadequate, and he appealed to residents to give that organisation all the help and encouragement they could.

An explanation of the use of the stirrup-pump was given by Mr. CONOLLY.

There was a large show of hands when the Chief Officer asked who would be prepared to attend a demonstration of stirrup-pumping. It was decided to hold a demonstration in the School Yard, on Tuesday, March 4th, at 7 p.m.

Mr. Stanley BELL appealed for volunteers for fire watching and said about 200 would be required.
