FOR RUSSIA. - Unity House Club members held their annual social and dance on Saturday. Over 50 attended, and a most enjoyable time was spent. The arrangements were carried out by Mr. Harold MARTIN, who was at the piano. Mr. Roy TRUBY, Mr. Roy PALMER, Miss Pat MARTIN, and Misses PASSMORE, Mr. COLLINS (accordion) and Mr. BAKER (violin) took part. The sum of £1 5s was collected towards the Mayor's Aid to Russia Fund.
LIGHTING OFFENCES
Ellen Ruth HAWKINGS, widow, 96, Taunton-road, was fined £1 at the Police-court on Monday for a breach of the black-out regulations. - Leslie James BARTLETT and Clifford WOOLLAN, labourers, Friarn-avenue, were fined 5s each for cycling without lights
GUN CONFISCATED
Frank Robert PERRY, labourer, No. 4 Court, West-street, was fined £2 at the Police-court on Monday for possessing a firearm without a certificate, and the gun was ordered to be confiscated. - Edwin DAY, dealer, 17, Chandos-street, who pleaded guilty to a similar offence, and to selling the gun to PERRY, was ordered to pay 8s costs.
COLLAPSED OUTSIDE DOCTOR'S HOUSE
Mr. Herbert COLLARD (57) a wicker worker, of 10, Ashleigh-terrace, was proceeding to work on Monday when he collapsed in Taunton-road near the residence of Dr. J. BOLLON. Assistance was rendered, and he was taken into the house, where he died while being examined. It is understood Mr. COLLARD had been in ill-health for some time and that Dr. BOLLON was able to certify the cause of death.
NON-STOP REVUE
“Hello, Everybody,” a non-stop revue, formed the the entertainment for troops and friends at the Town Hall on Sunday evening. The entertainment was presented by Billy FORBES, who compered the programme, which was billed to feature Charlie WHITEHILL (comedian), Alice (“a new artiste with a voice”), Mary MUSGRAVE (“a new and different artiste”), “Six Delightful Girls,” Jack COOK (magician) and his attendants, Nanette (“a versatile girl”), Horace MUSGRAVE (bass baritone), Wally PRITCHARD (singer), and the Westonians' Dance Band, led by Corpl. Cyril MESSENGER, and also comprising Stanley MOSS, Joe HODGSON, Jack TIDBURY, Don LOAKE, and Denny BOYCE.
COUNTY PETTY SESSIONS
Mr. C. B. GREENHILL, who presided, was reappointed chairman, and Mr. H. H. BROADMEAD vice-chairman, at the County Petty Sessions on Friday.
A fine of 12s 6d was imposed on Joseph Harold SKUSE, of 8, Cornmoor, East Huntspill, for a lighting offence when cycling.
Edgar NUTT, of “Thirlmere,” West Huntspill was fined £2 for infringing the black-out.
Cuthbert Geo. SHEERE, car proprietor, of 141, St. John-street, Bridgwater, was fined £2, and Wm. LOCKYER, farmer, of Crossway Farm, Middlezoy, £3, for using unauthorised lights on motor-cars.
For excessive speed, Emile John FRAGUIERS, 44, Whitmore-road, Taunton, was fined 10s; Arthur Edward BELL, of 6 Court, West-street, Bridgwater, was fined 10s for exceeding 20 miles per hour with a motor-bus during darkness.
THE R.A.F. IN ACTION
LECTURE BY AIRMAN M.P.
Flight-Lieutenant Hamilton KERR, M.P. For Oldham, who had been temporarily released from the R.A.F. to undertake propaganda work for the Ministry of Information, gave his lecture, “Enemy Raiders Approaching.” at Dr. MORGAN's School on Friday. There was a representative audience, comprising business people, Civil Defence workers, and the A.T.C. Company.
The lecturer described what happened when enemy bombers were detailed to attack our ports, &c. and then showed how the Observer Corps, Anti-Aircraft Batteries and Fighter Command went into action in defence. The lecture was followed by two films, “Wings of Youth” and “Fighter Pilot.” Captain C. TRENCHARD, commanding the A.T.C. Company, presided
