NORTH PETHERTON

FOR RUSSIA. - To provide aid for Russia Miss PURSEY, of Wood Lee, has consented to receive gifts of clothing and bedding, which will be forwarded to the Bridgwater organiser, Mrs. W. CHARD. Contributions would be gratefully received.

MEANING OF PLACE NAMES

A members' meeting of the Women's Institute was held on Friday Mrs. G. BOWERING presided, and Mrs. MANSFIELD acted as secretary. Mrs. PHILLIPS gave a talk on place names and their meanings. The social half-hour was occupied with a general knowledge test and dancing.

LICENSEES HELP RED CROSS

Licensed houses in the village have contributed the following sums to the Red Cross and St. John FUND:- Compass Inn, £1 19s 1d; Clarence Hotel, £1 11s 10d; Globe Inn, £10 7s 10d; Lamb Inn, £3 18s; Mason's Arms, £1 11s 2d; and Swan Hotel, £2 4s 9d. Funds were raised by such methods as collecting threepenny bits, dart competitions, three way marrow competitions, estimating weight, number of seeds, and selling slices, and a competition for a model “Defiant” 'plane (hand made), given by a Bridgwater resident.

LATE MR. A. BINDING

The funeral took place on Saturday of Mr. Albert BINDING, of Butts Corner, who died unexpectedly, following a short illness. He was 69, and was the senior collector for the Congregational Church annual hospital effort. For a number of years he was employed by Messrs. J. C. CLATWORTHY & Sons. The mourners were:- Mrs. A. BINDING, wife; Mr. A. IRISH, brother-in-law; Messrs. Albert, Stanley, and Victor BINDING, sons; Misses Winnie and Phyllis BINDING, daughters; Miss I. IRISH, sister-in-law; Mrs. SEARLE and Mrs. GARDINER, sisters; Mr. and Mrs. PARSONS, Mr. and Mrs. WILLIS, Mr. and Mrs. SNOOK, and Mr. and Mrs. VILLIS. There were many wreaths.

ASSAULT STORY

Mrs. Bertha MILLER, of 2, Hammet-street, was at Bridgwater on Friday bound over for six months for assaulting Mrs. Mary SMALL, of Brookdale. - Mr. C. B. PARDOE, for complainant, said Mrs. SMALL was the owner of the neighbouring house, of which defendant was tenant. At 9.20 a.m. on September 19th complainant and her husband were discussing what had taken place between defendant and complainant, when defendant came round the kitchen window and called her a bad woman and other things, and threw a bowl of water over complainant. - Evidence was given by the complainant and her husband, Clifford SMALL.- Defendant admitted throwing some water over complainant. - Her husband, Silas MILLER, also gave evidence.
