IN SINGAPORE?

BOB STOCKMAN WAS AT NAVAL BASE.

Among local men who are thought to have been in Singapore at the time of its surrender is Writer Robert Roy (“Bob”) STOCKMAN, aged 20, of the Royal Navy, only son of Mr. and Mrs. A. F. STOCKMAN, 20, Greenway Crescent, Taunton.

He left England in August to serve on the China station and was posted to H.M.S. Sultan, the Singapore naval depot. His parents have frequently received letters from him, all written before Singapore was threatened. Bob then stated that he was enjoying himself very much and was playing rugby football and soccer for the Naval base against teams from warships.

In the past he had distinguished himself at rugby and was a constant member of the Taunton club's team for several seasons until he joined the Navy in March 1941. He is an old boy of Taunton School and on leaving was employed at Avimo, as a draughtsman. He later worked as an accountant in an office in Hammet-street.
