TWO BROTHERS KILLED

POLICE CAR INVOLVED NEAR BRIDGWATER

Two sons of the late Mr. James STANDERWICK, a former well-known Bridgwater builder, were involved in a fatal collision with the local police patrol car while riding a motor-cycle in Taunton-road, North Petherton, on Monday evening.

Raymond STANDERWICK, aged 26, married, of Ashleigh-terrace, Bridgwater, who had been temporarily released from the R.A.I <sic should be R.A.F> received injuries which proved fatal, and his brother Roland, 38, of High-street, North Petherton, died from his injuries on Tuesday night in Winford Hospital, near Bristol, to which he was removed earlier in the day for special treatment.

The accident occurred at about 7 o'clock between Huntworth Gate and the Compass Inn. The police car was proceeding towards Taunton and the motor-cycle travelling in the opposite direction. It appears that as a result of the impact the car was thrown on to is <sic> side. P.W.R. STUCKEY, who was driving the car, and P.C. CREED, his passenger, received attention at the hospital for minor injuries, but were not detained.

S.O.S. BROADCAST

On Wednesday evening, after the death of the second man had been announced an S.O.S. was broadcast for he driver of a vehicle which was in the vicinity at the time to communicate with the Chief Constable of Somerset.

INQUEST ADJOURNED

The inquest was opened at Bridgwater Court House on Thursday afternoon by the Deputy Borough Coroner, Mr. H. A. CLIDERO. Mr. J. A. SCRYMGEOUR, of Mr. C. B. PARDOE's office, represented the Police.

Evidence of identification was given by Mr. Peter STANDERWICK, of Swan Lake House, Taunton-road, director and secretary of Messrs. J. STANDERWICK & Sons Ltd., builders, Taunton-road.

He said both brothers were bricklayers by trade. Roland, who was unmarried, was employed by Messrs. CHIVERS & Sons, Ltd., builders of Devizes. Raymond joined the R.A.F. in February 1940, and was released about six or seven months ago to work as a mechanic in an aircraft factory.

The Coroner adjourned the inquest until Thursday, December 10th, at 2.30 p.m.

The funerals take place at North Petherton Cemetery to-day (Saturday), at 12.30 p.m.
