BY YACHT TO AUSTRALIA

Commander R. D. GRAHAM, R.N., retired, of Stawell House, in an entertainink <sic> talk to the local Labour Party at Unity House, described his adventurous voyage with his daughter in his little yacht, “The Caplin.” just before the war, from Bridgwater to New Zealand and Australia.

LABOUR'S MESSAGE TO MR. CURTIN

A message heartily congratulating Mr. F. CURTIN, Prime Minister of Australia, on his “Tremendous victory for Labour and the democratic way of government,” has been sent by air mail by Mr. W. J. KING, hon. secretary, at the request of the Bridgwater Local Labour Party. The message added: “You will earn the gratitude of all countries that are aiming to bring about Labour Governments, and your victory, will help us in securing this. The splendid way you have lead the Government of your country since you have taken office has gained the esteem of democrats the world over.”

SUDDEN DEATH OF MR. C. HOLMAN

The death occurred suddenly at his home on Wednesday afternoon of Mr. Clifford HOLMAN, of 25 Rhode-lane. Mr. HOLMAN, who was 54, was at one time employed in the local brick and tile trade, but he had not been able to work for some years owing to the effects of an accident. The circumstances of his death were reported to the Coroner, and a post-mortem examination was made on Thursday. As a result an inquest was not considered necessary. Before his injury Mr. HOLMAN was a prominent member of the Transport Union, in which he held office for some years.

In a match on the Fleur De Lis range on Wednesday evening No. 4 platoon of the Home Guard beat the R.A.O.C., by 17 points. The scores were:-

WINTER PROGRAMME OF Y.M.C.A.

The local Y.M.C.A. has acknowledged £11 7s 4d collected by Mr E. MONTACUTE, 15, Northgate, towards the Entertainment Fund which helps to provide entertainment for members of the Forces. During the coming winter months a programme of events for the men and women of the Forces stationed locally will include social evenings, whist drives, film shows, spelling bees, quizzes, billiards and snooker tournaments and matches, table tennis, and a dancing club. The canteen, the writing room, and the chapel will continue to serve their useful purposes.

CORNISH 700. - The result of the race flown by members of the Bridgwater Social N.R. Homing Society from Tamworth is as following:- 1 and special (given by Mr. W. SEALEY, G. FRY R.P. £6,100 FOR SMALL FARM

Bidding opened at £5,000 for the 45-acre residential holding Metford House Farm, East Bower, at the Bristol Hotel and at £6,100 Mr A. BAKER was the purchaser. The sale was conducted by Messrs. Wm. King & Sons, of Chew Magna. An enclosure of pasture land, with frontage to Chedzoy-lane, containing 3,824 acres, was sold to Mr. O. FRY at £520. Enclosures of pasture and arable lands at Dunwear containing 32,228 acres. received biddings up to £3,250, at which sum the property was withdrawn. A cottage with garden and orchard at East Bower, known as “Summerway,” the property of Mr. Charles HARDEN, was also withdrawn. Messrs. Titley?, Long, Taylor, & Denning, Bath were the solicitors concerned.

BRIDE OF AIR GUNNER

The wedding took place at St. John Church, Saturday, of Dennis HOTTON sergeant W.O. air gunner, younger son of Mr H. HOTTON, of 55, Poplar-avenue, Hove, and Miss Olive Maureen LOTT, younger daughter of Mrs. H. LOTT of 69, Bailey-street, Bridgwater. The Vicar (Rev P. M. TAYLOR) officiated. The bride, given away by her uncle, wore a dress of white satin with silk net, her bouquet being of pink carnations. The bridesmaid, Miss Peggy KELLY friend of the bride, wore a dress of pink taffeta with silk net. The “best man” was Flight-Sergt J. TITMUSS. A reception was held at the home of the bride, the guests numbering 40. The honeymoon is being spent at Weston-super-Mare. The bride's travelling costume was a pink cloque dress with bolero to match, and a short fluffy coat. There were many useful presents.
