NORTH PETHERTON

LAND GIRL”AS PRIZE

A whist drive in aid of Mrs. CHURCHILL's Fund was held at the Y.W.C.A. Hostel on Tuesday evening. Fifteen tables were occupied and the prize-winners were Mrs. C. W. COATE, Mrs. ARGALL, Mrs. W. J. COURT, and Mr. AMERY. The competition was won by Mr. BURROWS, the prize being “Lottie,” the land girl, made by a member of the Women's Land Army.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY PARADE

Remembrance Sunday was observed at St. Mary's Church, the service being conducted by the Rev. J. ADDY, assisted by the Congregational minister, Rev. S. J. ROBINS, who gave the address. Members of the British Legion (under Mr. R. A. WATTS), members of the Women's Section (Mrs. P. T. PRYCE MITCHELL), Home Guard (Lieut. J. SLOCOMBE), Air Training Cadets (Pilot Officer H. MUSGRAVE) and Girl Guides (Miss RUMSBY) assembled at Wood Lee and marched to the church. Special hymns were sung and the organist was Mr. W HUMPHREYS. Part of the collection was devoted to the Earl HAIG Poppy-day Fund. Following the service the parade returned to Wood Lee for dispersal.

LATE MR. HENRY BOARD

The death occurred at Weston-super-Mare on Thursday of last week of Mr. Henry BOARD, a former resident of the village, who was 75. He took a great interest in the North Petherton district Horticultural Society, for many years being a member of the Committee.

The funeral at North Petherton Cemetery on Saturday was conducted by the Rev. S. J. ROBINS. Those present at the Cemetery were Mrs. PALMER, Mrs. C. HADDON, Miss M. BOARD (daughters), Mr. A. PALMER and Mr. C. HADDON (sons-in-law), Mrs. HAWKINS, Mr. and Mrs. BAKER, Mr. FAY, Miss REED, Mr. T. LANE, Mr. and Mrs. COX, Mrs. HUBBARD, Mrs. CARTER, Mr. BURTON, Mrs. G. HADDON, Mr. S. T. CLATWORTHY, Mr. L. S. CLATWORTHY, Mrs. S. BERRY, Mr. an Mrs. F. MARCHANT and Mrs. W. GIBBS.

TWO GOOD CAUSES

Thirty-seven tables were occupied at a whist drive in the Memorial Hall on Thursday in aid of the Nursing Association, and to help provide wool for knitting comforts for members of the Forces. Mr. C W. STONE was M.C. Prizes were distributed by Mrs. C. F. HAWKINS to the following:- Ladies – 1, Mrs. TREGASKIS, 10s voucher given by Mr. and Mrs. T. G. WILKINS; 2, Mrs. HUBBARD, 10s voucher given by Mr. F. MARKS; 3, Mrs. HALL, jug (Mrs. BAGGS); 4, Mrs. BOND, 5s voucher (Mrs. CARTER); 5, Miss B. FOSTER, groceries (Messrs. TOWNSEND); 6, Mrs. VICKERY, hot water bottle (A. KNITTER). Gent.'s – 1, Mrs. L. WATTS, garden fork (Mr. E. BOND); 2, Mrs. TOWNSEND, Pyrex dish (Mr. RICHARD); 3, Mrs. CLATWORTHY, basket of onions (Mr. W. CARKETT); 4, Mr. E. HODGES, saucepan (Anon.); 5, Mr. KEEPER, handkerchief sachet (Mrs. PACKHAM); 6, Mrs. H. CORAM, cigarettes (Mr. R. N. GROVE). Mrs BOND returned her prize in aid of the funds.

Miss CRANE won the prize for the mangold competition, given by Mr. W. C. PERRY; and Mrs. C. WILTSHIRE won the chair given by Mr. A. MILLER, in the nearest estimate competition.

The net proceeds amounted to £30 14s 8d.
