RETIRING AT 90

NORTH PETHERTON COUNCIL CHAIRMAN

At the close of North Petherton Parish Council meeting on Monday, Mr. J. SLOCOMBE, who will celebrate his 90th birthday next month, intimated that he would be resigning the chairmanship at the next meeting.

Mr. SLOCOMBE said he would continue his membership of the Council and attend the meetings as regularly as possible. “I always hoped to carry on until I am 90,” said Mr. SLOCOMBE, “and I think I have had a good innings.” At the next meeting he hoped to propose that Mr. E. J. ROGERS be elected to the chair. Mr. SLOCOMBE thanked members for their loyalty to him during his many years as chairman.

Mr. SLOCOMBE has been a member of the Council since its inception 46 years ago. He has been a School Manager for 51 years, having been chairman of the North Petherton, North Newton and Northmoor Green School Managers since 1910, a Governor of the Dr. MORGAN's School, Bridgwater, and the County School for Girls.

During 1907 he was appointed a member of the Bridgwater Board of Guardians, and he continues to be a member of the Bridgwater and Langport Assessment Committee. He has represented North Petherton on the Bridgwater Rural District Council for 37 years, having been Vice-Chairman for a period; and was appointed county magistrate in 1920.

Mr. SLOCOMBE has been President of the North Petherton Horticultural Society and deacon of the Congregational Church and Sunday School Superintendent. Despite his age, he is a regular cyclist.
