MERCHANT NAVY COMFORTS FUND

A successful dance in aid of the Merchant Navy Comforts Fund was held at the Coronation Room on Friday. Freddy Andrew's Band played.

SKITTLE ALLEY TO BE RIFLE RANGE

Application made on behalf of Mrs. O. A. COLES, of the Swan Hotel, North Petherton, for consent to use the skittle alley for the purposes of a miniature rifle range was granted by Bridgwater magistrates on Friday. - Inspector W. F. BURTON said there was no objection from the police point of view provided that some substantial protection was given to the windows when firing took place.

WAR MEMORIAL FUND

A whist drive was held at the Memorial Hall on Thursday last in aid of the War Memorial Fund. Mr. C. W. STONE was the M.C. and there were 17 tables. Prize-winners were: Ladies – 1, Mrs. VICKERY; 2, Mrs. SAMPSON; 3, Mrs. SKINNARD; 4, Mrs. YARDE. Gentlemen – 1, Mr. G. PARKER; 2, Mr. A. UPHAM; 3, Mr. A. H. WHITEHEAD and Mr. E. WARREN; 4, Mr. CHITTOCK.

The competition was won by Mrs. G. HOOPER.

W.I. GIFT TO DUTCH PEOPLE

The Women's Institute met at the Memorial Hall on Friday, Mrs. G. BOWERING presiding.

The Hon. Secretary (Mrs. GUNNINGHAM) reported that 78 knitted garments had been completed and a parcel of mending materials collected from members sent to the Dutch people. A letter of thanks had been received.

Miss BALCOMBE gave an interesting talk on stories in music, illustrated by gramophone records.

Competition winners were: Six plain biscuits, Mrs. UPHAM; six ginger biscuits, Mrs. MAJOR. Songs by Miss P. SELLICK and rounds by members occupied the social half-hour.

Tea was served by Mrs. STONE and Mrs. HARDWIDGE.

LATE MRS. W. POTTER

The death occurred on Thursday last week, after a long illness patiently born, of Mrs. Lucy POTTER, wife of Mr. W. POTTER, 2, Pilot Elms, North Petherton. Mrs. POTTER, who was 64, was well known and highly respected in the village, where she had resided for many years. Much sympathy has been expressed with the family in their bereavement.

The funeral took place at the Cemetery on Monday, the first part of the service, conducted by the Vicar (the Rev. J. ADDY), being held at the Parish Church.

The family mourners were: Mr. W. POTTER, husband; Mr. and Mrs. P. POTTER and Mr. and Mrs. R. POTTER, sons and daughters-in-law; Mr. T. LANG, Mr. Joseph LANG, Mr. Jack LANG, and Mr. W. LANG, brothers; Mrs. M. LANG, Mrs. R. LANG, and Mrs. B. LANG, sisters-in-law; Mr. D. POTTER, grandson; Miss E. LANG, niece; Mr. and Mrs. H. SUMMERS and Mr. and Mrs. L. POTTER, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Mrs. CROSS and Mrs. BAKER, friends.

Mr. F. POTTER, serving overseas, was unable to attend. Many friends were present.

There were many beautiful floral tributes.
