Veteran Taunton Sportsman

Death of Mr. R. DYTE

The death took place in Taunton and Somerset Hospital on November 29th, of Mr Richard DYTE, of 5, Gray's-road, Taunton. Mr. DYTE, who was 72 was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. DYTE of Milverton. He resided at the Post-office at Hillfarance for 14 years before coming to Gray's-road, Taunton, nineteen years ago. Mr. and Mrs. DYTE celebrated their golden wedding on April 6th this year. He had been in the employ of the G.W.R. for 39 years, until he retired seven years ago. His death followed a long illness, borne with remarkable courage.

He was a great lover of sport. In his younger days he played for the Milverton Rugby Club, and many other local clubs. He was a champion hurdler, and a familiar figure at most athletic meetings thoughout the county, where he had won many valuable trophies. He was a member of the A.O.F., joining the Milverton branch as a juvenile. Much sympathy is extended to Mrs. DYTE and the family.

The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, the first part of the service being held in the Victoria Methodist Church, and was conducted by the Rev. Cecil DAWES. Mrs. R. LOOSEMORE was at the organ. The hymns, “When the day of toil is done,” and “O Love that will not let me go,” being sung. The interment followed at St. Mary's Cemetery.

The mourners were: Mrs. M. E. DYTE (wife), Mr. and Mrs. R. W. DYTE (son and daughter-in-law), Mr. J. DYTE, Mr. and Mrs. O. DYTE (cousins), Mr. and Mrs. F. MILTON, Mr. and Mrs. F. BRADFORD, Mrs. F. HEARNE, Mrs. B. WHEELER (brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law), Mrs. F. CATTLE, Mrs. R. WILKINS, Mr. and Mrs. A. MANNING, Mr. S. LOVELL (friends). Many other friends and neighbours attended the service. There were a number of beautiful floral tributes.

The funeral arrangements were entrusted to Mr. Leonard E. SMITH, of Haydon-road, Taunton.
