FORMER DOLPHIN INN LICENSEE

DEATH OF MR. A. J. WHITTON

Mr. Albert James WHITTON, of 13, Westgate-street, Taunton who died on Tuesday at the age of 83, was a former licensee of the Dolphin Inn, Duke-street. When, in 1937, he had completed his 32nd year in business, he retired to live at Westgate-street. He was a native of Cullompton, where he took a post as a pupil teacher at the elementary school. On leaving he worked first as a clerk to the G.W.R. and later at an ironmonger's at Tiverton. He left Tiverton to take the licence of the “Fisherman's Rest” at Plymouth and in 1901 came to the “Dolphin Inn.” While at Tiverton he was a pioneer member, and later secretary, of the Ancient Order of Foresters, and when he came to Taunton he retained his interest in the Society. On his retirement the licence of the “Dolphin” was transferred to Mr. Harold VINCENT, his stepson.

He leaves a wife. His eldest son, Mr. J. WHITTON, is the verger at St. James' Church, Taunton. The funeral took place at St. Mary's Cemetery yesterday (Friday). The family mourners were:- Mrs. J. S. WHITTON (wife), Messrs. J. and A. WHITTON (sons), Mr. and Mrs. F. DAVEY (son-in-law and daughter), Mr. and Mrs. S. MAJOR (son-in-law and daughter), Mr. R. WHITTON (brother), and Messrs. Harold and Howard VINCENT (stepsons).
