Bathpool Farmer's Wife

Inquest of Mrs. F. RICHARDS

Pathologist's Report

Mrs. Bridget Mary Radford RICHARDS, aged 61, the wife of Mr. Frederick RICHARDS, a well-known farmer, of Bird's Farm, Bathpool, died suddenly on Friday of last week.

After complaining of a bilious attack, she spent last Thursday in bed but soon after midnight was suddenly taken worse and died within an hour before a doctor could reach her. Her death was the subject of an inquest on Monday conducted by the Coroner, Mr. Geoffrey P. CLARKE.

Mr. RICHARDS said his wife had always enjoyed good health. He realised something was wrong at about 12.30 a.m. on Friday when his wife had “rattling” noises in her throat. He at once sent for help and 'phoned for a doctor, but she died about 10 minutes before he arrived.

A LIVER COMPLAINT

Dr. Crichton MacGAFFEY, pathologist stated that the cause of death was cirrhosis of the liver, which was almost invariably due to alcohol. It could be caused by taking it regularly, even though not excessively, over a long period.

In reply to the Coroner, Mr RICHARDS said he always made cider on his farm, and his wife had access to it. So far as he knew she was not in the habit of having anything but cider.

Returning a verdict of “Death due to alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver,” the Coroner said it was clear there had been no excessive drinking within the previous 24 hours, but that the cirrhosis was due to consumption regularly over a long period. He expressed sympathy with the relatives.
