Fivehead Bride

Miss F. E. GRIDLEY and Mr. H. J. BARR

On Thursday of last week, many well-wishers gathered in brilliant sunshine at St. Martin's Church, Fivehead, for the marriage of Mr. H. John BARR, only son of Mrs. BARR, of “Clevelands,” Beer, Seaton, to Miss Frances E. (“Teddy”) GRIDLEY, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward GRIDLEY, of Langford Lodge, Fivehead. The bridegroom is engaged in the Liverpool Pilot Service. The bride during the war served in the W.R.N.S.

Entering the church on the arm of her father, who gave her away, the bride wore a gown of white lace over deep cream foundation, with a veil of cream net and silk lace (lent for the occasion) and a headdress of orange blossom. Her bouquet of delphiniums made a striking contrast.

She was attended by Miss Noreena LODGE, North Curry (friend) and the Misses Pamela PROUT, Janet BYE, Gwyneth OWEN and Gillian PROUT (cousins). The elder bridesmaids were attired in ankle-length dresses of white cloque, with picture hats, while the child attendants wore white net ankle-length dresses over cream foundations and poke bonnets. They each carried a basket of flowers toning with their slippers and hat ribbons.

The best man was Mr. Peter SCOTT, also of the Liverpool Pilot Service.

The Revs. WHITWELL and GEDGE solemnised the marriage. The hymns, “O Perfect Love” and “Lead us, Heavenly Father,” were sung, and wedding music played by the organist (Miss HILLARD).

After the ceremony a reception was held at the Lambert Hut, where over eighty guests gathered. Toasts were proposed by the best man, the Revs. S. WHITWELL and GEDGE, Mr. A. Key MATTERSON, Lieut. SQUIRES, R.N., Mr. SWINNARD and Mr. R. G. DODGE.

The popularity of both the bride and bridegroom was shown by the numerous and valuable presents. The gift of the bridegroom to the bride was a gold bracelet and the bride's gift to the bridegroom was a silver cigarette case. The two elder bridesmaids received silver brooches, and the three younger bridesmaids silver bracelets (gifts of the bridegroom). The wedding cake was made and decorated by the bride's aunt.

The bride and bridegroom left later in the day for Cornwall for their honeymoon. Their future home will be at Birkenhead.
