Death of Mr. J.. E. GOODLAND

Taunton Chartered Accountant

Mr. James Easton GOODLAND, a well-known figure in the business life of Taunton since the beginning of the century, and founder of the firm of Messrs. Goodland, Bull & Co., chartered accountants, Hammet-street, died on Tuesday at the age of 70. Mr. GOODLAND, who had been in failing health for some time, lived with his sister, Miss A. S. GOODLAND, at The Haven, Wyndham-road. He was unmarried.

Member of a family which has been in Taunton for several generations. Mr. GOODLAND was a son of the late Mr. William GOODLAND, coal merchant. He received his early education at a private school and then went up to Trinity College, Oxford, where he gained a second class degree in history. An academic career seemed to be open to him, but he decided on accountancy and served his articles with Goodman, Son & Pollard in Taunton. Afterwards he left to gain further experience in Dublin before returning to found the firm of Goodland, Bull & Co.

In the first World War Mr. GOODLAND joined the accountancy branch of the Army and saw considerable service in France. He was the senior partner in the firm which he founded, and was interested in a number of other businesses. He was until recently a director of the Bridgwater and West of England Building Society; a director of Messrs. Allen, Ltd., Tone Bridge; and a director of Messrs. Goodlands, coal merchants, Bridge-street. For many years he was auditor to Taunton Town Council.

A keen sportsman, Mr. GOODLAND in his younger days was a footballer (Association) and played for the Y.M.C.A. He was also a hockey player and refereed hockey matches up to last year. He could play a good game of tennis.

One of Mr. GOODLAND's main interests was his church work, and he was a churchwarden at St. Andrew's.

THE FUNERAL.

There was a large congregation at the funeral service at St. Andrews Church yesterday (Friday), conducted by the Vicar (Rev. J. du B. LANCE), assisted by the Rev. F. L. SHEPPARD (former vicar). Interment followed at St. James's cemetery.

Mourners were:- Ald. C. H. GOODLAND, managing director, Messrs. Goodland Ltd. (cousin), Mr. Richard HYDE, Messrs. L. DANIEL, S. PERROTT and C. W. NURCOMBE (representing Messrs. Goodland, Bull & Co., Taunton), Mr. J. WEST (manager Messrs. Goodland, Bull & Co., Tiverton), Messrs. J. BURROWS and L. MARKS (Messrs. Goodland Ltd., Taunton), Mr F. W. REED (manager Messrs. Goodland Ltd., Tiverton), Preb. G. RUCK, Bath, Mr. H. Hiram HALLETT, Mr. H. D. COUZENS and Mr. G. HISCOCK.

Miss A. S. GOODLAND (sister), and Mr. Stanley GOODLAND were unable to attend.
